Haunted Tank.. the Jigsaw Tank,, w JEB Stuart, Arch, Rick, Slim... ( WIP, updated 10/16 DONE !!)
Posted by p38jl on Monday, February 20, 2012 12:57 AM

I've always wanted to build this tank.. I've been collecting "stuff" to make it..

From an issue of Haunted Tank.. they list the "ingrediants"... I will post scans of the mag with reference pics later.,,, here's some of the "stuff" that will be pieces of  the Jigsaw...

[The Chassis is a T-34,, I'm not sure which T-34 kit will be the base kit...Photobucket:550:0

I have metal barrel somewhere.. and some PE for the chassis... hummm.... where did I put that ???

***KITS USED***

Tamiya  T-34/76 1943 for the chassis

Tamiya M-41 Walker Bulldog for turret and barrel

Voyager PE 35181 upgrade mod 1941 for photo etch, fenders, grills

Verlinden #968 for resin upgrade and PE ( was not able to use the resin rear hull peice, to small)

I used to love GI Combat even if it was over the top in realism.

I wanna know more!

This is near the top of my "to do" list for 2012 as well.  Are you going to switch the drive sprocket and idler as per the diagrams?  And I'm sure you have seen, there are many features that appear and disappear from issue to issue. I think it'll be a lot of fun -- the pseudo T-34/Panther/M41 hybrid.

Same here, I intend to use an old Revell 1/40 scale T-34 hull as a base.

I'm not 100% sure which T-34 base tank I will use yet.. and not sure about changing the drive wheels either.. I have all the comic books in the series from when they made the Jigsaw tank , untill they lost her.. so I plan on reviewing them again( for fun ) and to pick which details to portray in my build.

the gun muzzle changes often..

the drivers and bow machine gunner's hull hatches... appear and disapear...

the barrel length changes..

so.. I;'m going to research more.. and pick my features...

they started out in the lil' Stuart, then that got blown out from under them,,, in the heat of a battle,, the guys raided a tank depot junk yard and built a new tank from various other tanks.. this became the Jigsaw tank.. they had this one for a bit then a Patton, then a Sherman..

I am completely unfamiliar with this comic book series. Building their own "jigsaw" tank type story sounds interesting, I'll be checkin this thread out Idea

Other changes from issue to issue:

Sometimes the drive sprocket is in front, sometimes it's in the back

Jeb's commander's cupola varies back in forth from left of the main gun to right.

Shape and existence of the drivers' hatches

Muzzle brake shape

Engine deck configuration

But who can complain right? These were comic books, and not shop drawings.  All the more for the aspiring "Jigsaw Tank" builder to fiddle with.  The craziest thing is to settle on the eventual shape of the turret.  In some issues, it defies any known laws of physics -- almost an Escher drawing.

BTW: I recommend scratchbuilding the turret, not just dropping the Tamiya M41.  Also note the shortened hull (count the roadwheels) as opposed to an actual T-34.

(As you can tell, I've examined this project in some detail ... LOL )

I'm going to try to include my personal favorite details and also the ones easist to replicate.. I've mocked up the Walker turret in the T-34 chassis hull and I think I may need to move the turret ring back a bit to add in the hull top hatches( I'd like to do this to show Slim and Arch... )  The road wheel numbers vary from artist to artist.. sometimes there's 6 .. sometimes 7.. sometime.. 10.. lol.. Aslo.. the cover art is lots of times differant than the story art, DC sometimes had 1 artist do the cover and another the story, I would say there is no definative "Jigsaw" tank....

The wheels on the side there remind me of a Pz. 38.

There is no question it will be fun following your build.  I have taken the first row of the seat in your theater!  Sgt Rock and Haunted Tank were my favorite comic books when I grew up in early late 70's and 80's.  Great memories...

By any chance you are planning to include Sgt Rock figure too to this build? Big Smile  It shouldn't be that hard, just rip the sleeves, build bigger arm muscles and wrap ammo belts around his neck.

This may be the official spec sheet from the comic but this version is one I NEVER saw in any issue and I read about every one of 'em...

The issue that may be the most interesting for this build is the one where the crew goes to the depot after losing their "factory" tank in action and actually jig-saws the thing together...if I recall, they name the parts as they are cannibalizing them...

Boy, it sounds like fun!  I recall seeing a shirtless US soldier somewhere... maybe it would be easier to start from there and add sleeveless shirt and ammo belts.  I will let you know if I see it again...

I always wanted to build Haunted Tank along with General Lee on a horse but it definitely will be the Stuart version... you are one real brave man!

Herr Field Marshall..  Its pretty close.. the main diff from the this "spec" and what we've read ,, is it has more than 4 road wheels( although they keep changing )... the turret sits more forward on the hull...I still have ALL my comics from my younger years.. and have all the issues from the Stuart to the end of the Jigsaw tank...(and untill the series was canceled)Angel

I'll scan some inside the mag pics for ya all to reminisce over later..CameraYeah

Been watching this the last few days and though I've never read the comics this looks cool as Censored.

P38: I've got a bare chest and arms from Velinden's US Marines conversion set which are nicely molded but a little beefy - more like 1/32nd scale almost. If you can use them for Sgt. Rock send me a note. I doubt I'll ever use them.

Manny,  I checked that issue, and scanned the page... here she is... other than the main gun and the 50 cal,, it makes no mention of the other parts used. also note.. the 5 road wheels..
