What to build next - help me decide!
Posted by Hinksy on Saturday, June 2, 2012 12:56 PM

Hi lads,

In my stash at present are two stunning Dragon kits:

  •  The 6228 Sherman IC Hybrid Firefly

http://www.dragon-models.com/html/6228poster.htm

  • The 6577 Flakpanzer I with ammo trailer

http://www.dragon-models.com/html/6577poster.htm

I'm really struggling to decide which of these kits to build!

I recently picked up the Flak as it had a third off the crazily expensive list price. I've looked into the 2cm gun and a replacement RB barrel is only £3 plus postage. I'll stick with the Magic Tracks as they go together really well in this tiny size.

The Firefly is one of my favourite pieces of Allied WWII Armour and having seen this kit built up it certainly is something special! Tracks are DS type which is fine as obviously no sag is needed although I understand that they might well need shortening slightly as they will be far too long? No problem. I'd replace the barrel for an aftermarket offering along with the .50cal too. It would be nice to build an Allied 'green-machine' for a change!

I was given the Firefly for Christmas one year ago by my parents (the Christmas going into 2011 so I've had it sat in my stash for nearly 18 months now) and I still haven't built it. So far I've always felt it looked a bit intimidating and I wanted to get some skills under my belt before tackling this huge and fairly complex kit - I feel ready to take it on now BUT I also really want to build the Flak! AAAGGHH! Bang Head

So, it's over to you guys! Which kit would you want to see built as soon as my wip StuG III is complete? A killer Firefly or a nicely detailed little Flakpanzer I? Both would be mounted on a base and would be highly detailed and realy kitted out. I'd be using a fair bit of aftermarket.

So, what's it to be - Flakpanzer I or Firefly? What would you like to see?

Has anyone built either of these kits? What did you think of them? I've built the Dragon Panzer I A as the standard machine and found that build to be very enjoyable and one I love to tackle again but looking at the Sherman? WOW? Talk about some serious detail! Cool

Many thanks guys - I'll appreciate your input!

All the best and take care,

Ben Toast

I have to vote for the Firefly. You don't see many of those and I love that long 17 pdr.

Firefly.

Maybe seeing your progress will motivate me to pull the partially started one I have out of the stash and get busy on it.Whistling

Saying that I've just remembered the Tamiya Willys Jeep which is several sub-assesblis at present!

I'd totally forgotten about that but it will have to wait - I feel like a more challenging build right now!

Ben:

FLAKPANZER 1A

SUPER nice kit, cool little machine, and maybe half-again as many parts as that Firefly, not including those really tiny-but-nice MagicTracks!  I admit I am partial to panzer I almost anything, but what would that possibly have to do with my vote? Whistling

DO put on a metal barrel with a proper little flash-hider, if you go this one!  It makes this great kit POP! Big Smile

Come on Ben, You can't build a *** tank during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee!  It has to be Her Father's Firefly!

I've built that kit and except for the original indie links it's a beut!

OK...

IF parts-count doesn't swing things (Flakie higher), nor size-on-the-shelf (Fly way bigger)... consider my favorite decision-making criterion... the sounds and monolog you get to make as you push the thing across the workbench!

Flakpanzer IA (Ingrid):  grrrrr - clatterclatterclatter - scrunch - clatterclatterclatter - squeak - clatter...  "ACHTUNG, Hans!"  - clatterclatter- "Halt Ingrid! Scnell! Ivan komm vom links! LINKS!" - clatterclat-SCRUNCH - "Feuer, Gunther, FEUER jetz!" - clink- Bam Ba-ba-ba-ba-bam - "***!  Gehen, Hans, GEHEN! Macht SCHELL!  Der verdammpte Russkie ... Er zurruck-kommen!" - grr-grrrrr clatterclatter - "SCHNELL, Hans, SCHNELL!" (Wrrrrrr RRRR -Ratatatatatatatatatat - ratata...) - "Geh -" -Wham!

Or something like that, with a Corporal Schultz type of accent.

FireFly:  RUMBLERUMBLERUMBLE - jangle - squeak - RUMBLERUMBLE - "Lads! Tiger ahead! There, right off to the right! SH*T!  He's on to us! SCOTTY! Get us off this damned road RIGHT NOW!" - RUUUUMBLERUMBLE scrunch clatter RUMBLERUMBLE Bang - "Corp! Load AP Smartly there, lad, smartly!" - (bang! clatter-SLAM) - "AP UP, Sah! " - "Scotty. Good place right here. STOP her NOW! - Guns! Get your Aim. Put it right at the base of his turret, if you would, please!" - lumlumlum whir-creak-grumble-clank- "Ready, SAH!" "Right-o.... SHOOT!" - BLAAM! - WHAAAM!  "RIGHT! Hole in one, boys! Hole in one! He's a deader and a right fine shot, there, guns!  OK, Scotty... Let's get us back up on the road, shall we?  Corp, you wouldn't mind doing up some tea now, would you? That's a lad!"

All this sort of stuff with, of course, some sort of Brit-sounding tones!Big Smile

Ok,

Having looked through the last few threads, looked through both boxes and after reading the instructions - plus looking at the VAST amount of German armour in my cabinet:

I've changed my mind and am going to build the Sherman as it looks like one tasty build- like Satch says being the Jubilee and all it's perfect!

Andy also made me think about things. The Sherman it is but what a really hard decision!

It will make a nice change but don't forget - I've still got a half completed Willys MB Jeep to complete too but I think that will wait until after the Shermie!

Panzerbob - This kit has DS tracks (see the link to the DRagon site on my first post) and not indie links.

Thanks for your input guys!

Take care,

Ben thumbs up
