Dragon Sd.Kfz. 184 "Elefant" ----FINISHED----
Posted by Ben323 on Monday, July 30, 2012 10:52 AM

Hey guys,

Here is my latest build ! A 1/35 scale Elefant tank destroyer. I opted for the plain elefant with no zimmerit because it was cheaper Stick out tongue and I also wanted it to look heavily battle damaged. It was my first time making zimmerit. This is supposed to be a late war elefant fighting in the last stand for Berlin. Therefore it is heavily damaged and it's zimmerit is severely chipped.

Now there is one major problem.... I put the tracks on backwardsEmbarrassedCrying well it doesn't matter... it is what it is.

Now I have a couple of questions.

1) What scheme should i paint it ? And since a lot of zimmerit is chipped off, would i paint red oxide primer in the chipped sections? Or would it be half painted over, half not because of the constant change of camo during the war?

2) Did the tank crews enhance the elefants armor? If so, how ? Because I was thinking tracks on the side of the hull. I have 24 tracks left plus tracks from many other german vehicles.

3) Can I improve on anything other than the tracks?

Thanks!

Unless the chipping of the zimmerit was recent, the crews would repaint over the chipped area with the hull color and/or camo paint as a normal procedure. Given the heavy state of wear you're depicting, my inclination would be to say that it would likely be repainted as opposed to having large chunks of exposed red oxide primer. You've kind of entered a "what if" type of scenario based on your description so you can go with whatever camo pattern using the three tone scheme you'd like or even give it something different of your own creation...this one wouldn't have a factory scheme under your circumstances so it would be whatever (or nothing) that the crew decided to apply under the circumstances...quite a few oddball things show up in the defense of Berlin. The Elefant's armor was pretty hefty to begin with and sloped, so crews tended not to add a lot of extra tracks and such to the side because it would actually encourage rounds to "dig in" instead of glance off...so you don't see that done much like you do with other vehicles. Still, it's your project to run with as you see fit, so if you want the look go for it. Wink

Thanks for the reply!

After a bit of thought and searching I think i found a good color scheme.

or....

both are not my models but I really liked the color scheme that they used. I think im going to go with the first one mentioned.

Thanks again,

Ben K.

Are you going for a "What if" scheme?  If so ok, but none of those vehicles (Elephant) were ever painted in either of those schemes.

Bronto is correct.

I've really only seen two-toned Elefants on the italian Front in yellow and green. I have seen swatches of tri-color jobs as well.

As far as I know, none ever saw action in Berlin.

Bronto, do you know what schemes the two elefants carried during the battle of Berlin?

Thanks,

This is how it would look. Approximately.

All the wheels would be the yellow color. Just didn't have enough will power to finish all of them Stick out tongue

If you can wait until I get home (About 2 weeks) I can look it up for you.  If not, get a copy of s.pzjg abt 653 history.  They were the ones that had the remaining few at that time.

Tigerman: Thanks ! But i dont know if I can wait that long because I just can't resist painting it. Painting is my favorite partBig Smile Also I have my first model show coming up in sept , so I really want to enter as many models as I can!

But I'll try to wait ! I'll just spray primer and red oxide and then I'll leave it like that till you come back!

Thanks Smile

Just my two cents, but that "diagonal" Panther scheme there was used pretty much mostly only by late war Panthers--especially in the last battles around the Kurland bridgehead area, if I recall correctly, and some that went farther East. for relief operations?

Hey guys, its been a while since I've posted. I've been reading about how the forum has died out and im pretty sad to hear that. I might be one of the newer memebers here but I find this place is amazing ! I love the atmosphere here and I'd love to see it stay.

Anyway here is what I have been up to lately. I got primer and paint on. I also decaled it ( I know the decals and paint don't historically go together but I think they look cool so that's all that matters Big SmileI put only one wash on so far and detailed a bit. I started the exhaust too. I think it's turning out nice so without further wait, here are the pics

Beautiful looking Elefant there and very nice paint scheme and weathering. A bit of flat to dull that slight shine, put on the tracks and you will have one great build. Nicely done.

Hi Ben,

Nice looking build there buddy. I'm not a fan of adding Zimmerit myself (because I'm a lazy git) so I asked for the latest Dragon pre-Zimmed Elefant for my Birthday back at the beginning of this month. I'll be starting it next month. Luckily they've used their heads and added some battle damage to to the moulded Zim in the way of missing detailed moulded sections.

I see you've removed the Tracks Ben. Did you install them but not fix them in place so they could be removed for ease of painting? If so is there any way they can be removed or could they be replaced with Friuls or Modelkasten tracks. My kit came with DS tracks - I'd send you them but I might use them on my build. Undecided yet as I'm a big fan of Friuls.

Good looking build sir!

Hey Ben,  may not be completely accurate but I really like what you have done!!  Your paint job came out very nice and I believe it may be one of your best builds yet.  It is very eye pleasing and I have really enjoyed looking at it.  Look forward to the completion Beer

Ben, theres been a few hickup's, but its not dead yet, far from it.

Nice work there. Is that paint scheme based on a real one or did you come up with it. It looks very different, i like it.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Hey guys!

Thanks for all the replies!Smile

TREYZX10R: Thanks !Big Smile

Blitzwing: I just got that clearflat on! Literally 10 min agoStick out tongue

Hinksy: The new elefant that came out with the zim has no battle damage moulded in. Thats why I opted for this version of the kit. Also I think my kit was the premium one so it came with indie link tracks (MagicTrack). I really like these but recently I got hooked on Fruils and my LHS has a pair on sale....hmmmmmm.Whistling Yup, there are two Ben's!Stick out tongue

PANZERWAFFE: Thanks for the kind comment! Boosted my morale tenfold !Big Smile

Bish: The paint scheme was originally used on Panthers in late 1945. But I thought it looked amazing and wanted to try it but I already have a different camo scheme for the panther which Im building right now.

wbill76: Thanks! Your builds are amazing and your one of the main guys who I idolize in modeling ! I strive to make my models as good as yours!Big Smile

No one has said a word yet about your zimm Ben and since i'm a redneck and don't know no better than to show my ignorance i'll step up and say something.

Your zimm is way to thick. For scale it won't be much more than a smear with the ridges in it.

Practice on a sheet of EverGreen before you do your next zimm covered build and the improvement will be great, you'll see.

Paint job looks really good btw and so does your workmanship.

Thanks for the constructive critique! It was my first time making that stuff so I knew it wasnt going to look amazing!
Oh yeah, quick question, what type of mud/dirt/dust color should i put on it if its been fighting in the city?
Thanks

Urban crud

How about shades of gray for concrete and maybe a hint of brick red for brick dust.

A light dusting of a buff or light tan for dirt dust.

Those would work for me anyway

Ben I was thinking lighter colors because your model is dark, get the picture?

These might get my point across for you

Hey Guys,

I finally finished my elefant! Stick out tongue

I molded her to look like a late war tank that has been fighting in the city for a while. I made some bricks and debris to make it look like things have been blowing up all over ! As per Pvt Mutt's instructions, my dust is a light grey brown color which I mixed up myself. Hope it pleases you ! Wink

The antenna I got from RBmodels as per usual.

Here are the pictures,

There you go!

If you want more pictures or have questions just ask. Oh and critique is welcome !!!Big Smile

I have no idea how accurate the paint scheme is but I love the weathering. The dust and rubble looks very convincing! Yes
