When I built mine the question of colours was giving me a headache, so I painted for a European scheme with whitewash????

glad to be of help. As the others have mentioned, that particular vehicle is known as the 'Bison II' although it has a much longer technical name that isn't necessary to repeat here. DML has it out as kit #6440 in 1/35 scale. Greg's suggestion could work equally as well depending on what you want to do with the weathering process...normally weathering darkens a color but with desert weathering the opposite tends to happen...the finish gets lighter depending on the methods/approaches used, so that could be a factor also in your paint selection.

, Dijon is an apt description of the color...I'm sure Testors was trying to tie their name specifically to DAK builders in their concoction of 'Afrika Khakibraun' as opposed to 'Afrika Dijon' but both are equal fictions!

Leon, I'd suggest using MM (SKU# 2088) sandgelb - it's a Luftwaffe tropical color (RLM 79), but the Heer had a tendency to "liberated" LW paints in Nord Afrika for camo purposes.

Bill's AFV is the Bison II, one of "Rommel's Funnies."  Basically, it was an extended Panser II chassis with the 15cm schwere infantrie gun mounted on it.

That would be the RAL8000 color I mentioned. Here's what Testors interpreted it to be along with the two-tone camo of RAL 7008 to go with it.

it shows Rommel in Greif and the caption reads  Greief was painted in panzer grey and over sprayed

with a sand color.What is the actual definition of sand color.

Yes, I'm still here on the forum. When it comes to vehicles sent over to N. Africa, timing and conditions are everything. The first batch of vehicles sent over in '41 were in Panzer Gray and then field camo'd using a whole range of things including painted on mud. Starting in March '41, the first 'Tropen' scheme was ordered for vehicles that used a two-tone disruptive pattern of of 2/3 RAL 8000 and 1/3 RAL 7008 (Testors MM line refers to these colors as Afrika Grunbraun and Afrika Khakibraun respectively but those are their own name inventions!). This 'Tropen' scheme was applied to vehicles at the depots or factories prior to shipment to the theater and the paints were also issued to units in the field to repaint their existing equipment.

The speculation about Grief's scheme is an ongoing one...there are camps that believe that it's sporting a 'hybrid' scheme that includes Panzer Gray for the disruptive pattern along with the RAL 8000 as the main color and others that think it's got the 'Tropen' scheme applied. Open topped vehicles when repainted typically had their exposed interiors painted to match the outside as having that dark of a color contrast would not be a good thing in terms of visibility from the air. I can't say for certain that Grief had a RAL 8000 interior vs. a Pz Gray one (what it would've received if it was a 'standard' 250 and not one repainted with the Tropen scheme) but that's the way I would lean if it were my model in the absence of any clear shots of the interior that show otherwise. HTH!

Most vehicles sent to Afrika in `41-42 were sent originally painted in schwarzgrau and either repainted (on the exterior only) in country or camo'd using the local earth added to water (or fuel).

Here's a pic of GREIF showing the two-tone on the exterior

 In the below pic, it appears the rear interior wall of the 250/3 is not the same color as the exterior

Leon the Sdkfz.250/3 Greif is a open top vehicle and both the interior and exterior are supposed to be the same color. As a matter of fact all Sdkfz.205 series halftracks are open topped and the interior color is the same as the exterior with the exception of the sdkfz.250/9 which is fully enclosed and painted a whitish color on the interior like the Panzer tanks.

Any question about painting the Greif's interior should be directed to WBill as he is way more knowledgeable than me on German Vehicles.

Oh and try painting the Panzer Shwartzgrau first before you paint the Panzer DunkelGelb as that can count as preshading .

No problem and you can use the Model Master Dark Yellow on some of the projectiles on 1/35 scale tank ammo as that is a pretty close match to Tamiya Lemon Yellow. And another thing to consider with Afrika Korps vehicles is that the paint closely resembles the color of Dijon Mustard which is a yellowish brown and you can lighten the color with some Model Master Flat white to tone the color down to come close to a faded version of the color which would have come from being in the sun for long periods of time.

Dark Yellow wouldn't work as it is too yellow. Try Model Master Panzer Dunkelgelb 1943 that is a closer match to the color used on the Greif as it looks like Tamiya Desert sand.
