Dragon Aufklarungspanzer 38t mit 2cm **Completed 3/2**
Posted by Jester75 on Sunday, January 20, 2013 2:41 PM

I guess the itch to be at the bench has returned as of late as I find myself spending more and more time there. Been building mainly a/c lately but I've been wanting to get back to this one for a while now. This is the Dragon kit and was started some time ago. I was initially excited about the build as I thought it was an interesting vehicle and the 2cm gun and mount is pretty cool. This kit is a complex kit and is by no means perfect. Some strange fit/build in some of the assemblies to be sure. Here is the hull with interior painted and weathered as much as its going to be. Going to try and get this one done by the 17th of next month in case I decide to go to AMPS in Atlanta.

And here is where I am on the 2cm turret. It has been painted Tamiya dark yellow lightened about 30 percent and has had a wash. Waiting for it to dry to start some chipping and drybrushing. Between the lighting/pics/wash it actually looks a lot darker than it is.

I am contemplating replacing the barrel with a turned brass one. Any recommendations?

Interesting looking build. As for the barrel, i am guessing this is a 2cm Flak gun. I would normally go for Aber or Armorscale/RB.

But this review on PMMS might help, assuming its the right barrel.

Excellent work so far, I just love anything nailed onto a 38t chassis.

Glad to see you back Eric. Neat little subject and like Terry said, I too have a soft spot for the 38t family.

Heya Eric,

Love the work you've done so far.

Just some thoughts about the barrel - it looks a bit short for a Flak 38, perhaps it's a KwK 38? You may wish to consider the later Griffon or Voyager offerings. These have the textured areas on the barrel and include a PE mag and PE surround for the slot in the body of the gun.

Thanks for the warm welcome back everyone!! Phil, I think you are correct about it being a KwK38.

Well the wash has dried. Added some chipping with oils and some drybrushing with craft store acrylics. Will start on the hanging turret radio set next and then hopefully I can focus on the outside of this little fella and get some camo going.

And a quick test fit into its spot

And thats it for today! Hopefully more ahead soon!

Ya gotta love the 38Ts

It's not about how fast you get there or even where you're going. It's whether you enjoy the ride.

A few more bits down. Went ahead and glued the superstructure down as well as the rear engine cover. This whole assembly was a very awkward fit for me. Seem like too much was being crammed  in the given space. It took quite a bit of pressure on the rear of the engine deck to get it down far enough to line up and to also pull the rear of the superstructure down. One thing I don't care for in this kit is how Dragon uses the brackets on the superstructure to literally push down on the fenders to give them that notorious 'bend' that has been the center of much debate.

In the last pic, you can see the kinda unique profile this vehicle had and also the bend in the fenders.

Ah yes the infamous fender kink! Nice job getting the hull top and bottom to play nice though, looking good!

The 38t was a rather small vehicle Owl. The kit itself might be roughly 3.5"x6"?

Thanks Bill!

Thanks Eric!

A few more baby steps towards getting some primer on this one. Got most of the stowage on that will be painted at the same time as the vehicle. Left most of the tools off as the way these attach, I think it will be pretty easy to build them up, put the clamps on them and glue them down with some Gator glue. I replaced all the molded on clasps on the stowage with excellent Griffon pe clasps. I lost a few at first till I got the folds down, then it was gravy from there. I feel they really add to the detail of any vehicle over the molded on ones.

Nice work on the PE Eric, definitely adds to the detail level. I'm with you on the Griffon PE stuff, I keep a fret of their generic German vehicle clamps handy and often use them to replace the kit-supplied stuff. I've found them to be the easiest type to assemble and use as well.

Thanks BIll!!

Well it took a bit longer to get back to this one that I wanted but I finally did. Over the last 2 days everything was primed with MM Earth enamel rattle can. Tonight I hit some of the panel lines and joints with some flat black acrylics for a little preshading. This was followed up with about a 60/40 dark yellow white mix. So far so good!! Tomorrow I will attempt to lay down the camo pattern if all goes well.

Not sure why that last one wont rotate as it is the right way in my Photobucket. Oh well.

"Seem like too much was being crammed  in the given space."

Imagine how the crew felt about being crammed into that tiny turret!! Surprise

Its looking real good Jester!  The PE detail work really takes it to another level!

Thanks Ernest! Now that you mention it, seems the only way into this vehicle was through the turret. The kit shows accommodation for 4 crew so talk about cramped!!

Nice work, Eric!

Don'tcha hate when the photo won't rotate right?! Drives me crazy sometimes too!

Nice work there on the PE as well. I admire a man who puts themselves through the hell of PE--but I have to agree, it certainly adds to the look!

Yours turned out very nice Crockett!! I vaguely remember when you posted it here the first time. Was there a build log you did with it or just finished pics? I like how the hatches are opened up. I am going to assume that is a a/m engine as my kit seems to only have bits and pieces in the box of an engine. It is very tempting for me to stop at the dark yellow and finish it out but I am interested in seeing it in 3 tone camo so we shall see hwo it goes. Thanks for posting those pics!!
