Generally, use a lighter color for dark base coats, and a dark color for light base coats. A good oil mixture for dusty tone is Raw Umber + White (Add or subtract for depth of color) + a tiny (and I mean "tiny!!") bit of yellow to give it a warmer hue. (Yellow oil is notoriously concentrated!)
