For other countries, try Google > Images and keep refining your search until what you're looking for begins to appear.

You could also search for hard copy reference works.

Can't answer your question Stik, but I've found tan carpet thread is excellent for rope. If you can get the cotton wrapped type, it can be used for winch cables too.

For rope, I use tan thread. For cargo straps, I use lead foil, cut to an appropriate width and painted to an Olive Green or Khaki color

When I served, the US Army used Cotton or Nylon webbing tie down straps for vehicle stowage. The straps came in various sizes for differnt items. I am pretty sure that the cotton webbing ones are the same ones or very similar to the ones used in WWII. What did other countries use for that purpose? Similar webbing straps? leather? rope? I know that crews will use whatever they can get their greasy hands on (we did- 550 cord, seat belts, etc.), but was the "official" issue tie down straps used by each of the major players: British Empire, Germany, Soviet Union, Japan, Italy, France?
