REVELL UNIMOG LKW 2T 4X4 IN UN MARKINGS
Posted by waynec on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 4:21 PM

first completion of the new year. this is an older kit i found at a vendor sale and, as i am into modern warwheels, an obvious buy for me.the build log is in the PEACEKEEPERS GB. warwheels build differently than tanks, at least until the top, and trucks even more so.

the suspension is flat brown with a dark gray oil wash which no one can see. it's not quite the color i was looking for. the muffler and exhaust are not heavily rusted reflecting on modern materials. i broke the tie rod twice so the wheels turn once. but that was the only real problem. i weathered it before continuing. yes it's a lot of parts but can you say INDY TRACK?

the cargo area is 6 pieces, the tarp and sides being a single piece. the interior construction tabs are hidden with painted modeling clay. there is no interior detail. NOTE check this before building as you may have to paint and weather the interior before assembly. i elected leave the tarp canvas instead of UN white for some color. the cab interior is sparten but adequate. had some decal slippage with the instruments, a good lesson learned. there were no rear windows so i made some which no one can see. again, for color, i decided they would leave the interior NATO green and the seat color looks military even if not exact. the same for the "water tan" colored 5gal cans. since i could open the doord i did and decided the MG-3 looked clunky so i left it off. it is PEACEkeeping not WARkeeping though my canadian LAV-III is armed to the teeth.

i primed it with armor white but, between the weather and not shaking the can enough, had some issues. this is why weathering is your friend. also it is annoying to have the primer color the same color as the base coat. i should know better but..... white is MMA flat white, canvase is MMA dark earth.

the decals were fragile and slid off the paper in 10 seconds so had to "build" a couple of the UNs and there is a bit of silvering. thanks to karl i have embraced oil based filters and washes. the lower part is raw umber and the upper part is a mix of sienna and yellow. i also played with lighter and darker for the tarp but don't think it shows. tiedown straps are painted and washed.the windshield was a bad fit and the clear mounting lougs very obvious as was my sloppy glue work. on the inside i hid them wuth L-bar styrene and on the exterior used a half round and strip to make a sun shield. UN peacekeepers don't go to the riviera. i washed the windshield to show wiper streaks and hide the side tabs. the base is one of my generic big warwheel dirt bases.

the build went through the usual "looks like crap" stage but all in all i am quite happy with the final product. a modern german soldier or 2 would look nice and i may build a specific base in the future.

Really nice work, Wayne. The undercarriage is exceptional.

I like it.

I agree with you on minimal rust underneath. Between modern materials and anti-corrosion treatments, it's virtually a thing of the past. I realize extreme winter climates can cause exception to this, especially having been an auto tech for almost 30 years, but rust is on the way out.

Very good Wayne!!

I like the setting also.

My only "uncomfortness" is that the tires are too clean.

But is a very good kit and great painting!

Hi Wayne,

I have been following your build and I never actually saw that "looks like crap" moment,

Your UN UNIMOG looks the part in every way, I especially like how you have depicted the movement in the undercarriage. It is very convincing, even if that is only in the angle of the camera and not in a live suspension.

Cool build, hope you are not finished in the Peacekeepers Group build!

Very Best Regards

Johan

thanks. that's because, other than the windshield, i never posted any "looks like crap" photos. next build i will take a couple when i reach that stage.

i did find pics of a PLA ZSL-92 (6x6 IFV) in UN white in haiti. i will look for the picture i may have to do another white one to try something else. also saw a pic of a JGSDF LAV 4x4 in OD as a peacekeeper somewhere. and i have enough modern stuff to do a NATO MERDC camo and just slap some IFOR decals on.

Wayne,

Wow, man---what can I say? What a great finish! The tones and shades you got with the oil filters and washes are spot-on! It's very hard to weather a white vehicle convincingly, but you seem to have achieved that with ease!  And I agree that the undercarriage looks perfect! Yes

Congratulations on pushing you comfort zone and stepping up a level in the finishing department! Toast

Next step: Pigments! Big Smile

Wayne, you know--PIGMENTS! The powdery stuff that you can mix with water or thinner to simulate dust and grime, etc. You've seen either Bill or I use them a lot on our blogs. Companies like AK, MIG, and now Adam WIlder have lines of them. LOok at my Wirbelwind thread again where I used them to do the splatter technique.

DUH!!! weathering powders. i have used them before i started working with pastels and have a selection of tamiya, doc o'brien's and bragdon. i haven't really sludged them up as yet but i have a new build, italeri BEDFORD 4x4 for north africa that may get your treatment though it seems a shame to hide all the chassis work. may have to pull out a track to try it on. (THE HORROR). thanks

Wayne, where's the tutorial on making bases. Yours are the best  because they add to the build not draw  attention to a rock or a tree. I for one could really  enhance my builds with your method(s). Thanks in advance for your consideration on this because I know you can't wait to do one for the masses. LOL

In all sincerity, thanks Wayne.

hey jibber. i know. i will make a small base and a tutorial for this one because i don't want to keep handling it since a wheel came off, the muffler came off and i learned how to sand off a blob of superglue without destroying the paint or weathering.

i. have a bunker base for 88mm FLAK which i will also do a tutorial for. no doubt the masses will suitably reward me for my endeavors and my name will be whispered in awe by all who witness them. LOL
