1/35th Panther G in Normandy (completed build)
Posted by Bish on Friday, April 25, 2014 2:49 AM

I put this in the Diorama section, but thought I would post it here as well.

I just finished up this build for the Longest day GB. This is the Dragon Panther Ausf G with moulded on Zimm. I added some parts from an Aber PE set, but this was such a great kit I did not need all of the PE, I used about half of the set. The kit came with DS tracks and a one piece plastic barrel so I decided to use them, and the moulded Zimm was really nice, I normally add my own.

For paint, I had intended to use Vallejo model air. But while the DY went on ok, I was not to keen on the green so switch to my old favourite, Xtracolour enamels. I then gave it a really thin oil wash and added AK's dust and earth effects for a duster but not to well used look.

The figures are a mix of Verlinden, Dragon and Trumpeter.

All comments, questions or suggestions welcome as always.

Really nice. I've always been nervous about putting plants on my tanks, but you've pulled it off really well. It definitely looks the part.

About the only thing I picked up was that there could be a little more track marks on the road behind the tank, but that's relatively minor since you have no water in the ditch, so it could just be a sun-baked-hard road. All in all, a great piece!

Thanks guys. Doog, I know what you mean about the foliage, I was not to sure as it can look tacky, I have done that myself in the past. But after studying lots of pics and moving it around a bit, I was pretty happy. And your dead right about the track. I made the mistake of doing the base to early and by the time the tank was ready it was to late. But I completely forgot I have some spare old rubber band Tamiya tracks I could have used. This is my first armour dio in about 11 years, so still stuff to re learn. But it is a tough one with dry dusty tracks.

Thanks again, its much appreciated.

Good build. I like that the mud wasn't overdone and we can see the pattern in the tracks themselves. Now where's my panther at? Bob

Thanks Bob. I wanted to portray a pretty new vehicle early in the Normandy campaign, hence the lighter weathering. Another Panther would be nice indeed.

Why thank you.

But I am not quite sure a flying bush would have worked as well. Wink

Bish love the camo and a really nice build. It's hard to do foliage right and I find it especially difficult to do figures that look realistic, I think you did a bang up job with this one. That shelf of yours must be filling up nicely.

Great job Bish. Looks like some of the tank pictures from Normandy with all the vegetation on board. The weathering looks spot on. Beer

Thanks very much guys. I did look at lots of pics of German vehicles with foliage to try and get this right. I think the trick is to think about how its attached to the vehicle. None of this is glued I place so its all held on how it might have been on the real thing, and it meant to was easy to re arrange it until I was happy.

Thanks again.

http://www.gotitans.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/nod.gif Other than the road surface critique, this has turned out really well. As aforementioned (since it is a dry earth depiction) I think you'll be able to get away with that issue by the very well done appearance of the dusty tracks and wheels..... http://www.gotitans.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/nudgewink.gif however, I don't think those heavy and stressed tracks are situated properly on the ground between the last two outer roadwheels in the first three pictures shown here.

Thanks guys.

wayne, in the past I have gone over the scheme with a thinned light coat of DY. But I didn't with this, the dust effects has toned down the camo and given me the finish I wanted.

disaster, the suspension arms were left unglued so it would conform with the base and there is a lump in the terrain there so I just left it. I wasn't sure whether to go for a dry look or not given the stormy weather in Normandy, but as this is at the start of the campaign, before the big storm of June 19th, I decided to go dry.

I like the over all effect.    Your use of cutting the frame to let the ditch "flow" through is just  right.

The lack of tracks may be a spoiler for some but , its not that bad ( they could have been sitting there all night and with activity going around them the tread marks got erased )

Any-hoo I like it

Thanks Steve.

You would be surprised at how little evidence of an AFV's passing on a dry track there is, especially when a column is moving along it. One thing I do need to work on is trying to give more of an impression of movement, aside from the position of the tracks, it does look like it sitting there when its meant to be moving along the track. Now that's a tough one.
