Colours for Meng's Terminator
Posted by snapdragonxxx on Saturday, August 16, 2014 5:48 PM

I splashed out on this chaps.....

and after spending time with the instructions I begin to realise that there is more to this kit than meets the eye.

I do have a couple of 30mm barrels coming for this but my post is asking for help with the colours.

The photo below is the colour scheme I would like to attempt (LOL).

For the light greenish colour Meng tell you to use Vallejo 71.009 Duck egg green from their model air range, but having used this on RAF fighters It is far to vibrant for a tank. So I ask, what are the actual colours on the Terminator above.

TIA

You could always use the vibrant color (if the tone is correct) and then knock it down afterwards with a filter, until it's the proper shade.

I always tell people who ask this kind of question the same thing: don't get hung up on "exact colors". There really is no such thing. Look at the model or photo and make a good approximation and paint it. Any search of "correct colors, exact colors, etc" in any modeling site will give you dozens of the same posts from actual veterans saying how the paints were often different right out of the can, and how thinning ratios, application methods, etc, all changed the outcome. Weathering, dirt, dust, grimes--even the color balance of one computer monitor vs another-all make telling "exact" colors impossible.

Based upon the photo above, I would use either Tamiya Khaki Drab or OD for the dark shade, Tamiya Buff for the yellowish shade, and of course, Black. It should look just fine.

Thanks Doog,

Of course you are right. It's the light shade that's just confusing me. I think I'll try Vallejo Yellow sand and see what comes out.

i;m thinking MMA dark green and MMA sand or MMA tan.  as DOOG said washes and environment will tone everything down.

i will pick mine up on Saturday but won't get to it for months.

Personally, Buff seems a bit far too light or tan for my tastes in this vehicle. I'd probably mix in a yellow/green tone in there a bit.

Looking at the photo of the real beast, I would suggest, from the Humbrol range Dark Green FS 34079 and Ochre.

This is my artist's rendition of the color. I can't tell you exact color or number because he uses industrial paints (spray type, preferably Leyland's) and he mixes them into desired colors to match the box art:

I've got another Terminator a few days ago and this evening my artist ("Art Instructor") will come to deliver new batch of armors. He will receive it among other kits and this time I want him to paint it in "Arms Expo 2013 Desert Camo" scheme as seen in the color painting guide. You'll get to see it next month.

Blimey MM,

doesn't your guy sleep?

The desert camo will be very interesting to see.

I use Vallejo and am just getting used to an airbrush. ATM I am working to provide Vallejo with correct samples for RAF WWII aircraft. I own a Mk IX myself and a local paint manufacturer provides me with my paint in acrylic for the aircraft.

I hope to actually deliver the samples myself to them in Spain once I am ready to travel. Will be nice to meet the people behind the paint! and let them get up close and personal with the real thing!

My armor builder (AI) has been quite productive lately, churning out 6 armors every two weeks. He's got the Terminator today and might be working on it right now.

You own a WWII RAF aircraft, a real one? and what does a Mk IX looks like? Is it Spitfire?

Good luck with your trip to Spain.

Yes. A Mk IX Spitfire. She is in full D-Day livery at the moment with the AEF stripes.

This winter she will be undergoing a full overhaul and I might repaint her, but I do like the way she looks with the stripes.

I also have the possibility to get hold of a FW-190 but it needs a complete rebuild. It's an expensive project Though and I don't think at the moment I have the finance to do it. It's good to get these old warbirds in the air again and hear the sound of those engines.

I also love my armour too and have a very large recovered KTII in my workshop. buy the time comes for it to leave it will be in full factory fresh working order!

Looking forwards to seeing your Terminator in desert camo
