Tamiya 1/35 Tiger II - Updated with figures
Posted by AnalogKid on Monday, November 10, 2014 10:01 PM
Greetings All, This is my second posting here to the FSM forum. This is a Tamiya 1/35 Tiger II (Production Turret) with a few extras: Tamiya individual track links, Alliance Model Works PE screens, and a Jordi Rubio barrel. I’m still working on the figures and will add them soon. I experimented a little with this one and hand-painted/brushed the camouflage pattern (the green and red) over the airbrushed dark yellow base. I had seen a few archive photos of Tiger II camo patterns where it seemed as though the patterns were painted in a similar fashion – with the use of a standard paint brush. I wanted to see if I could recreate that look. As I was executing it (Tamiya acrylics thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner) it came out OK but not perfect…there were some minor discrepancies in the finish, at least to my eye, anyway. I almost scrapped it and moved on to another kit but I stuck with it and realized that after I do all the heavy weathering the imperfections that were evident to my eye would probably for the most part disappear. Well, I’m happy with the way it came out although I will probably not do hand-painting like this again…I will most certainly use an airbrush with hard-edge masking. Other finishing details include a white oil filter to simulate fading, black oil pin wash, dry-brushing of highlights with acrylics, paint chipping with acrylics, dark steel pigment applied to the high-traffic areas and outside edges/corners, enamel rust washes and streaking, enamel oil grime/sludge on the back deck, and graphite applied to the “steel” road-wheel rims. I finished up with earth colored pigments on the bottom/track and a final dry brushing of chrome enamel on the tracks. Constructive critiques are very much welcome and appreciated.

Very impressive for a hand-painted camo job. Bow Down

My only real nitpick is the sections of track from the sprocket down aren't hanging naturally and are actually defying gravity and "drooping" upwards. But we all know that indy link tracks can be a tricky beast to train and sometimes the unexpected happens.

Overall, very nice. Smile

Thanks for the positive comments, very much appreciated. Phil, yes, I noticed the gravity-defying droop as well after the tracks dried...but, decided to execute as-is nonetheless. I have recently gotten back into armor modeling and have tried indy track links a few times now. I'm never going back to the vinyl if I can help it. A little more labor but they come out so much better in my opinion. Now, I just need a little more practice and hopefully they'll get better with time. I tried the Fiulmodel links on a Stug III back in the spring and love the way they came out...but, much more expensive, of course. I had the Tamiya links on hand in my stash for many years so it made sense to use them. If I do another Tiger II in the future I'll probably spring for the metal links.

Hello again, everyone. As I mentioned in my initial post I would add pics of the figures once I had them finished. I dedicated last weekend to finishing them up. They are Jaguar resin figures painted with Vallejo Model Color with a few colors from their Model Air line mixed in.

Very well done cat. Love the weathering and the camo job. Don't know if you're done with the paratrooper, but his coat is too clean. ;)

Oh WOW, I like so much the cammo on the tank, streaking and rust.

The figures are painted so nicely, the expressions and details are so good!. I wish I could paint figures half that decent...

Great job, and as they have mentioned. they are a little bit too clean on the clothing, hands and face. Remember they are in the middle of batllefield with very less access to water, soap, etc.

Hi AnalogKid,

Thank you for sharing this!

That is mean looking Tiger II.

What is the trick with the Tamiya Acylics, I never manage to get anywhere close to your result (Very convincing btw.) when I hand brush them.

Either they clog, don't give any coverage or streak.

Very Best Regards

Johan

Thank you all for the positive comments...they are very much appreciated. Also appreciated are the positive critiques. I take those to heart and try to improve my work with everyone's suggestions.

With regards to the Tamiya acrylics and handbrushing I used a rather wide, flat brush (I believe I used a .5 inch wide brush if memory serves) and used generous amounts of paint when applying. I also thinned (very slightly) with Tamiya lacquers. But, keep in mind that this was a paint job I had to go back and touch up many, many times. In fact, I found out that I spent more time doing it this way than I would doing it with masks and an airbrush. I linked a photo below of the WIP during this phase of the build. It shows the paint job in its naked form, before all the weathering was applied.

AK your Tiger looks fantastic, I sure hope you post more builds. You really have the techniques down, from rust to to weathering, camo to chipping, it al works very well. Tamiya makes a great Tiger II kit and a nice platform to use everything in the toolbox. Terry
