Cyber Hobby 1/35 Brummbar (Late)

Like I said, I'm pretty sure this is probably a re-pop of Shanhai Dragon's old Brummbar. That kit did have some real issues, most notably the front glacis plate which needed to be beefed up with a big slab of styrene card, and PE rails. The TC hatch interior was pretty deficient too.

The whitewash doesn't look terrible, just spotty. I figured it was brushed on. To be honest though, I've done many brushed-on WW finishes, but you have to thin the paint and let it run, like thr real slop would do. And just be consistent in your coverage. The thing is, hairspray technique is more for chipping rather than the gradual wearing away of a cheap WW cover. I've achieved better results with judicious dry brushing and select re-painting of details in the base colors. It's tougher to do it that way though when you have a camouflage scheme below it though, like you've got there.

You might be able to soften some of the contrast with a light wash of raw umber oil on top of the WW parts. That might blend it a bit more, and then you can go back in and re-apply some white streaks and chips over the muted parts to get a nice depth to the WW?  

Doog - I brush applied the white wash over a hair spray coat and distressed it with warm water and a stiff brush.  I agree it did not come out the way I intended.  On the next tank I will apply the white wash with the airbrush instead.  I have generally enjoyed Cyber Hobby's releases, but this one was kind of a dud.

Tiger - Thanks for the reply, I was definitely going for a weathered, field applied look.  

I like it a lot. I think most of us have been spoiled by modelers who do the hair-spray whitewash. I think your look is very plausible, because in most cases it was haphazardly applied.

I'm surprised to hear that the Cyber Hobby one had issues--it must be a re-pop of the old Shanghai Dragon kit? I built that years ago (It's over on  Armorama in the "Features" site) and I remember I had to do some serious dressing up for it to look good.

I think your model looks pretty good, but your whitewash looks a bit distractingly-spotty. It might be because of the way you applied it--did you brush paint it on? Still, to be honest, it could very well be realistic--a lot of photos I've seen of whitewashed tanks are pretty gnarly-looking, but I understand if you're not happy with it. I always try to get something more "artistic" than realistic in the finish, and sometimes it's a thin line between going too far one way or the other.

Still I wouldn't sweat it. It looks pretty imposing and nasty, just like a Brummbar should!
