My project has slowed to a crawl...

It just amazes me how much detail Dragon left off this kit.  I am way short of matching the pictures so far, but I am going for it.  See Pictures;

Yes the handles on the boxes are scratch built.

Your attention to detail is astounding. I'm glad you're building this as it makes my M-103 seem smaller lol.

What is that finish on your model?

Thanks Mike,

I've got a long way to go before I can get this one into primer and paint.

As for the "finish"?

just over spray from doing the tracks and suspension prior to joining the outer track units to the main hull.

I also textured the cast hull...

Got to check out your M103 build when I have more time to give it a proper looking over.

Wow!  It's as ugly as ugly get! Very interesting subject!

I like what you are doing so far with your build! Yes

That double row of tracks/wheels would have been a nightmare to maintain.....

Looks wayyyy cool.

http://www.les7pechesdumotard.fr/MillanNet/indubitablysmile.gif The actual pics with your interpretation of the model is a very positive enhancment.

Attention to detail is as important as the quality of the finish.

I'll be a watching this.

Not to worry, model club meeting today at my shop,  there will be much thrashing on models today!

Might even be able to get one of my evil minions to punch out all the disks I need for the pulleys....

BTW, what you working on next "Zaster"?

I was actually considering picking this kit up, but when I read the reviews of it and especially the sadistic treatment of those ridiculous 408 individual track guide teeth, I said "Uhn-UH!" I can't imagine how or why, in this day and ag with the technology we have now, they can't come up with a less time-consuming and frustrating way to put on this type of tracks. This is what made me consign my old Sherman Easy Eight to the darkest depths of the stash where it languished in the modeling oubliette until being sold.

I must agree Karl,

The tracks did p*ss me off bad.  But the utter lack of good detail put fourth on the outer hull compared to the insane parts count on the suspension {most of it unseen} is what really is annoying!  I feel like I am building a 70's Tamiya kit, as fare as the hull details go.  That sucks for a $65.00 kit.  Shame on you Dragon Models!  But I digress, I will make it look good regardless.  It's just so much extra work that should have been done by the mold makers.

BTW, what you working on next "Zaster"?

I've been trying to get my Porsche VK45.02 finished, but life just keeps popping up at the most inconvenient times.

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2ntWQn2x8MmjcDpodRsZKhCjru050XSak7T8p0XIjx6iSiwv7Eg As of late I've just been maintaining a presence on the forum and making comments. http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/images/smilies/blah.gif I've had a lot of complications here at home to deal with during the last couple of years or so but at least the forum and going to the gym keeps me from being bored to death and really helps pump up the spirit. http://ekladata.com/nicosite.eklablog.net/perso/gif/wait.gifTime most assuredly flies.

At least in my mind I can carry this project with me on the go and visualize my objectives with what and how to go about doing whatever I'm going to do with this. That way when I get an opportunity to get back to work on it, I will have a clear image of how I want it to look and be able to get right into it... heck, http://lfg.hu/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/blahblah.gif I quite often wake up at night thinking it over and imaging ideas and techniques.... it can wear you out when you can't turn it off.

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/images/smilies/emot-words.gifI keep forgoing pictures since I've only been able to work in spurts. It's going to be more of a finished build (but not as much of a wip) 'cause when I DO get the time, I get so deeply focused/involved in what I'm doing that I'm actually having fun and I just don't want to step away and grab the camera.

Model building is not an obsession but a hobby for me, and http://getoffmyinternets.net/gomipress/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-smileys/sFun_blahblah.gif I prefer quality over quantity anytime; however, both are better if that is what the builder prefers and can successfully pull it off.

http://files.shroomery.org/smileys/shrug.gif So, to sum it up.....  there'll be some unique and good stuff with my VK so I hope it's going to be a treat for 'ya. Overall, I expect it to be as good and much more interesting in regards to the finished project than that ol' Jumbo Sherman I did.

This is some good stuff you're putting up here. I especially love that luscious texture work on the superstructure..... http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/nowhiners/smileys/yum.gif~original looks good enough to eat.

I understand what your going through.

My mom lost her 7 year long battle with pancreatic cancer on Christmas  morning.  You know what, it's not until afterwards that you realize how consuming that emotional roller coaster can be.  during that mess I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes, and it is taking my vision from me slowly.

This is why I haven't been active for so long too.  I am working my way out of depression now, and I have a new doctor who is helping me try to get my glucose under control.

So I am back to doing some epic builds to help push myself to get better...

glad you dig this build!  Coming from someone with talents like yours it means a lot.

Hang in there, as the old Waylon Jennings song goes "storms never last".

http://patriotden.com/fotki/congratulations/ThankYou-smiley.giffor some insight into your situation. I would never have suspected that you had problems with your vision. For you to face the vision problem with your degree of optimism is a win win for you. If you ever do lose it all, you'll at least have your models as proof of evidence for your braggin' rights.

http://i.stack.imgur.com/XtBk7.gif I'm sincerely sorry for your loss. My little mom suffered a very slow and declining condition. Her slow death from Parkinson's lasted for nearly 7 years. She left 71 weeks and 4 days ago at the age of 88. She out-lived dad 40 years..... he's the one that died at Christmas here. I think of them  e v e r y  day so I'm still climbing outta the pits too.

Her departure caught me right after a stage of modelers burnout. Then, about three years after THAT, my left eye became something to look at, not to look with. Every thing I do is with http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hKEZqzXPJl8/U1AXHbLb9iI/AAAAAAAAGkQ/lzo0_P-eXr0/s1600/nick-fury-skype-emoticon-with-eyepatch.gif one eye only and 2.25 readers. The loss of multiple functions in that eye 37 years ago was the result of a brain tumor (when I was 27) the size of a tennis ball, which also affected the nerve responses on the left side of my face. It took out my hearing on that side as well.......   so at least I still have my face.

And no, that's not why I sometimes act http://www.katzy.dsl.pipex.com/Smileys/loony.gif looney on the forum here.

I'm just having some harmless fun with the goofiness and hope that others may get a laugh, even if it's at my expense (however, I do sometimes think they took out the brain and left the tumor on purpose - probably about the same size anyway).

Otherwise, I'm lucky to be doing fine. There are not a lot of guys my age that have endured a brain tumor and can squat (free weight) 275-315 lbs for triple sets of ten .......(not braggin' -  just explaining). http://www.bodybuilding.net/images/smilies/squat2.gifI'm very thankful for that ability and will continue with it until I am also finished here too.

Having a great son is a great asset also. I took over when he was 11 mths old when his mom left. He's now 26 years old with a Masters degree and a 4.0 GPA at UNCG. Every time I talk with him, my respect for this young fella just continues to upgrade. This is another source of good fate for me after all the clutter in my world and confirms your comparative that, "storms never last".

Well at least my problems aren't as tragic as the future you may well have to endure. I sure hope that maybe what I've written here can be a source of inspiration for you. It never matters how bad things may be, but there is always someone in worse shape.

I wish you the best and believe

that the future curve of technology

will bring you a  positive resolution.

Your comment on my modeling ability is most humbly appreciated.

Ouch guys, I've been getting very little done here recently from a busted up left shoulder and guess I should quit whining now! I've always enjoyed looking at you guys work and it's even more impressive now!

The T28 looks outstanding, I've got one of the kits and was planning on building it straight from the box but love all the extra work you're putting in there.

Awesome thread, PJ! THose davits are definitely much improved!

I totally agree with your feelings on this model, regarding the suspension detail and lack of real effort on the smaler details. I feel like they rushed this kit. Then again, that happens too often in this industry. Well, you're definitely making the most of it!

Sorry for the silence for the last couple of days.

But progress has been made!

I had to carve from scratch one of the 4 tow hooks needed for this project.

then I had to make a mold and cast the rest of them:

Thanks Karl!

As a mater of fact there are no tow hooks of main tow cables in the kit.

There are however small towing cables included for when the external tracks are being towed like a trailer.

This being said, there is no provision "in the kit" for stowing them on the hull.

I also decided to replace the kit tools with some of my copies of the Formations Models set.

time to rest till tomorrow.

hope I can get this monster into primer soon!

Just noticed this!

In this picture the t28 seems to have single pin track on it vs. "live" track.

This is the only pic like this, all other have "live" track, interesting....

@Panzerjager: the T28 had live tracks.  Regardless of what the face of the link was composed of or looked like, the design of "Live Tracks" had to do with bushings INSIDE the link which made it curl.

web.inter.nl.net/users/spoelstra/g104/track_vvss.htm

Look at these Sherman tread types.  ALL were live tracks.  The use of live tracks had to deal with how the suspension was designed -- and had nothing to do with whatever was the configuration of the link shoes themselves.  They could be smooth rubber, rubber chevron, composite rubber/steel, all steel, steel cleat, whatever -- and all be LIVE tracks.

The T28 Assuault gun's suspension was designed for live tracks and thus, ALWAYS had live tracks mounted to it.

But the correct primer is iron oxide, and the way I weather Is to actually wear away paint in certain areas to duplicate "real" wear and tare on the paint.  So the primer must be applied 1st. so as to be Visible as i abrade the paint.  Hope this helps...

I agree with  you Panzerjager.  The interesting pic you put up earlier do make the tracks appear to be T66s.  But T66s were live tracks -- no doubt about it.  As were the T80s and T84s.  All three HVSS tracks were live.

Like I said before, the features that made the track "live" were bushings in the pin attachments that linked the track shoes together.    Remember, the suspensions were designed to only take live tracks.  Both the VVS and HVSS (which is what the T28 had) absolutely could only ride with live tracks.

Thank you Roy, You did verify my observation that it does look like that tank had T66 tracks on it.

But, you are mistaken on one thing.  T-66 track as pictured above were classified as " Dry pin" track I.e. dead track very much like the Germans used in WWII.

Regardless as to the suspension design, the 1st M4A3E8 Sherman tanks came equipped with them.  And latter were equipped with "live" track.

I just would like to be able to find out the "back story" of that picture, and why they were using that track at that time.  What that picture does provide is a possibility for an interesting option as to model this T28 kit...

But I digress..............

I know you're talking about the paint but here's some interesting info about the two main types of iron oxide.

Fe2O3 is red and Fe3O4 is black. They change back and forth fairly readily and appearance depends on impurities and how it occurs. Steel beams as they come from the mill have a deep blue, almost black mill scale from surface oxidation that will rust to the more stable red. Some firearms were once browned (in the 1800s) by repeatedly rusting, rubbing off the loose rust, then rusting again and doing this repeatedly until finally oiling. Others were given a gray to deep blue finish by doing the same thing but adding the step of boiling in water to turn the red oxide to black.

OK guys,

Question time, I am not looking for someone to start pouting regulations!

I want honest interpretations of a photo.

Look at the photo below, tell me if you think the tools are painted Olive Drab, or do they have natural wood handles???

I need a consensus...

A wood finish would give some nice contrast and

Those tools look OD to me. To give some contrast/variety, you may want to show bare metal from use in edges of the shovel blade and axe head. Also try using a different OD than what you used on the tank itself. Something like Testors OD in the little square bottle for example.

Yep  painted, I think.  The idea of different color OD is a good one and the shovels should look "paint scraped"  having been used just a bit.

Different shade of O.D. on the tools with some wear shown on the blades of the axe and the shovel. That's my plan for my M-10 (if it ever gets finished)

I agree with  you Panzerjager.  The interesting pic you put up earlier do make the tracks appear to be T66s.  But T66s were live tracks -- no doubt about it.  As were the T80s and T84s.  All three HVSS tracks were live.

Thank you for shedding new light on this subject.

Always good to learn something new about these machines.

T26E4 provided me a link to prove this track is also a live track.;

thanks again!

I hear you my friend!

Between age a diabetes beating up on my vision, it does get harder to do these builds every year.

Thank god for Optivisors!

I have had some interruptions this last week but,  I have been making progress in the background here.

The figures are just about done and I have just "finishing touches" to go on the T28/T95.

Next I need to get the base done.

I promise I will post more pictures tonight.

Well, on one hand, the detailing and construction of the model are and was impressive as hell--the model itself came out great. I hope you won't take it negatively though if I say that I question your decision on painting certain aspects of it. Or, NOT painting certain things.

I know it's probably "technically correct" to have left the tools in the what would have been the standard over-painting of the base coat, but it just hits me as too monotone, and almost looks like an error. No weathering at all on those either? Hmmm. I guess it could be plausible, but it's not very exciting as a model.

Likewise, this model would benefit greatly from some patiently-applied pin washes to really bring out all the panel lines and details. The side skirts almost look like one big piece, and you can't see any of the bolt holes in them, nor separation of panels. Pin washes would bring that out.

I don't know if you forgot to paint that periscope cover in the bottom picture, but i looks like you might have..?

Where the cable is running/rubbing along the hull--some smart chipping would look appropriate there. Likewise would it around the hatch tops. The would have some wear at some point.

Also, the tarp or bundle along the side--it's all monotone green, even the straps. You should use a different color green--perhaps a more olive drab tone?--on that, and paint the straps a different shade too, to contrast and provide visual interest Again, it just fades into the hull as it is now.

I hope you don't take offence to my comments, but I would feel as if I weren't honest to not say that there are so many little things you could still fdo to really make this model "pop" in a big way.Smile

It is an amazing build, something I could never do, but I have to agree with The Doog, it's a little too "pristine", perhaps because it never saw battle, so you can't really beat it up, but all that OD on that great big slab makes it hard to find the details. Just my opinion

Just noticed this!

In this picture the t28 seems to have single pin track on it vs. "live" track.

This is the only pic like this, all other have "live" track, interesting....

panzerjager

The tank came out great, awesome job. To solve the track mystery the pic that you are using the tank does have T66 metal links. I know this because that picture is of my 1/6th scale T28 model that I took a few years ago.

http://eastcoastarmory.com/t28/t28.htm

Back when I built the model I didn't have the tooling required to fabricate the M26 T80E1 track, so in it's place I tooled up and used the easier T66 Sherman track for that build. It's not technically accurate as the only track the t28 used in it's short life was the T80E1.

I also have this 1/35 kit in my stash and will be starting on mine next week.

As seen in person people loved it at the model show!  I only lost to a well detailed Sherman with a full interior, but I'll take 2nd.

Panzerjaeger, sorry I didn't get here before the "clean-up". Been to the bathroom three times since I talked to you in PM. Sad

Anyway, I too apologize for letting this get out of hand, and am pleased beyond words that this has been resolved. I have been here long enough (since 2007) to see things like this hurt the forum, and I should have known better. Embarrassed

Let's move on from here in amity and friendship. Smile

Hell of a cool model, too. Congrats on your well-deserved trophy! Yes

Interesting to read about.

So dad was on a M40 GMC for four years in the 50's.

Much bigger gun, but no armor. 12 inches is a lot of armor, and only 500 hp.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I used to play WoT over a year ago before I gave up from boredom and frustration.

I remember the stunt they pulled on April Fool's Day a few years back with a doctored photo and a faked up article about a T28 experimentally deployed in combat in Korea. The response was hilarious- you'd think more people would check the date before they posted!

Though it does now make me think of how cool the T28 would look with a Korean War tiger face...
