Trumpeter BR 52 in Winter Camo
Posted by Wilbur Wright on Thursday, April 9, 2015 6:01 PM

Hi Guys, I have just figured out how to post photos and for the first time have a digital camera, so I am going to be posting some of my more interesting builds which have never been posted before. Just getting back to the bench after being very busy for a couple of years.  Trying to finish my  big 1/400th QM2, and just started the Meng D9 which won't help my QM2 schedule.

This Locomotive is a stellar kit. I had this in my small stash then saw the photos in Xtreme Modelling magazine issue 19 of this camo scheme...and just had to build it. I don't usually take artistic license when building a model yet this example may be one case. There is such an example existing in the Sinsheim Museum in Germany, however I don't know if one in this scheme ever existed during the war.

The figures are Trumpeter Karl Moser figures painted in the railway workers colors, the officers are from the spares box.

Please excuse the coal not yet pulverized to 1/35th scale, and there may be moire in the photos because of the lines.  Hope you enjoy seeing this and that everyone is well over here in the armor forum

Just some build notes. The black is Tamiya German Gray and flat black to tone down the black for scale. First I sprayed the whole model with MM flat white enamel which acted as a primer as well, then masked the camo according to the model in the museum, then painted the black shade. Had to go back afterwards to small mask any protruding areas that may have been trouble  then cut in the color by hand brush.

The undercarriage is MM Italian red enamel. When fully cured I treated the red shade with minwax oil based poly mixed with burnt umber artists oil paint , brushed on, in order to oil up the undercarriage.  That was a first for me.

I chose the orange type red because I had seen photos of the real thing faded to that shade.  The vinyl hoses were murder and I just couldn't get them on right. So they are placed behind the piece were the nubs are where they are supposed to be.  I may attempt to get them glued on correctly at some point, for now its noted in my build log.

Wow, that is just show-stopping-stunning!

Usually I"m all about weathering something to look worn, but in this case, I think the clean look really sets this model off! Maybe some pin washes to define the details, but beyond that, it's cherry.

Beautiful work!

cool. that looks like the one in the Polish museum.  The running gear is nicely weathered. you should lay your own track for it. Ot's really easy and doesn't take much more time than working with the plastic.

SHAMELESS PLUG i have a tutorial here on how i do mine.
