Grant heres a similar base I did a while back, I didn't use it for my finished model because I made my own but you can see that more can be done with the provided track. An overall dark paint and dry brushing  will pick up individual stones and the rails can be painted a dark rust color and some type of mirrored or chrome color for the top of the tracks. The risers could be painted in a dk wood brown color. Very simple if you intend to use the tracks in a final build. I love the subject, keep posting. 

The model looks very good but I have to go along with the RR gravel recommendation. A while back I built the Dragon SSY flat wagon and I used the coarse RR gravel and a black oil wash was applied for shadows as shown in the picture below. Some coarse turf was clumped here and there.

Also the tracks need some red brown rust color except on the rail top where it would be polished from friction. My rails look a bit red but that's from the lighting which made it look brighter.

The Wagon look excellent, I quite like the fact that you have chosen Dark Yellow over all.

I am doing the Panzerlokomotive myself and look for good refernce pics.

The figurines certainly add interest and they do tell a story in your dio.

Don't know much about the German uniforms but I do like that you added the figures to give a sense of scale. And the armoured train is very cool, it's always different to see something different around here.

The good: the model is well done, the scene is nicely composed, and I give you points for even attempting figures. They really add human interest to the scene.

The bad: you didn't really get the camo schemes for the uniforms that close; generally there is no "gray" camo clothing. The commander on top of the train car looks closest to acceptable, but of course this is coming from a figure painter with a dedication to accurate German camo. They ARE quite challending to paint,.

Suggestions for improvement: lose the "Truffula tree tufts" on the groundwork and get some actual railroad scale gravel and put it down with maybe some static grass patches. You'll have a much more convincing and pleasing ground cover. Alternately, you can put a black oil wash over your gray ground paint and then try drybushing the stones or wiping off the wash off the top of the stones when it's dry. It will give you a better loooking ground.
