Russian JS-2 question.
Posted by Reaper420 on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 3:49 PM
Okay guys I had a question. I searched the interwebs and could not find anything concrete or well anything at all to clarify for me. So I was wondering, is the JS-2 the same as the IS-2? You know, one in the same like the King Tiger/Tiger II and the ME109/BF109 ( I know ME is Messerschmitt and the BF is the model designation)? Probably should have put this in the general discussion forum, but I figured it might be more productive and get quicker responses here. Thanks for the help guys!

Short answer yes. And IS-2 is the correct name.

Yes, it has something to do with the Russian letter for "J" being written as an "I".

"Josef Stalin" is "iosef Stalin" in Russian.

Thanks guys. I figured it was. I ask because I was looking for a 1/35 Tamiya IS-2 but kept getting JS-2. When I looked at the kit at my LHS, I was like "it looks exactly the same" so I figured it must be and bought it.

And something along the lines of most European languages of the "J" being pronounced like a "Y" consonant in English (remember in English, Y swings both ways, vowel and consonant), and in the translation of words and names from the English/Latin alphabet and the Russian/Cyrillic alphabet. Fun stuff for us when trying to read signs in that part of the world. Joseph = Josef/Iosef (and pronounced Yosef)...
