Latest Work - AFV Club M109A6 Paladin
Posted by HeavyArty on Thursday, July 2, 2015 7:54 PM

I finally got around to finishing the AFV Club M109A6 Paladin that I started a long while ago as a build log on Track-Link.  You can see the whole build there.

I had no issues with the kit and really enjoyed building it.  I also used a portion of the Legend M109A6 Stowage set (LF 1271) on it. The instrument panel next to the driver's hatch is a copy of one in the Black Dog M109A2 interior set.

I finished it as a howitzer from B Btry, 1-41 FA, 3 ID in the initial invasion of Iraq in March of 2003.

I also added stowage to my M992A2 FAASV and re-marked it to go with the Paladin.

As always, all comments are welcomed.

Those are both very nice. Is that something 3rd ID did was to mount the IPs out of the hull for easier reading for the drivers? I have never come across that before.

Really nice looking builds there.

What's the role of the M992A2. I am guessing battery command, or is it something else.

Very cool Gino! The models look great but I really love the storage, it kicks them up to a whole new level.

One question though, doesn't look you used a pin wash on the panel outlines, bolt-heads, etc. Do you not use them or maybe they're subtle and my poor eyesight can't see them?  Maybe a stupid question but I'm still trying to figure all this stuff out.

Thanks guys.  I'm glad you all like them.

Gamera, there is a pin wash and other subtle weathering.  The camera and lights tend to wash them out though and they don't show up well.

All M109s and M992s have the capability to use the externally mounted instrument panel.  It is normal for them to be used when traveling down the road since the driver can not see them when it is down in the hull and he is out driving.  The hatch is barely big enough to stick out through, let alone look back down and see the instruments.  Whether the driver pulls it out and externally mounts it is up to him.

The M992A2 FAASV (Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle) is an ammo carrier.  It hauls around the ammo for the howitzer.  The Paladin can only carry 39 rounds on it, which it can fire very quickly.  The M992A2 carries another 93 rounds and can also go and reload as the howitzer is firing.  The M992 also has a conveyor system inside which slides out to cross-load ammo.  It backs up to the rear of the howitzer and extends the conveyor into the back of the howitzer.  Rounds can then be quickly cross-loaded or the howitzer can fire ammo off the conveyor to preserve its own ammo.  Most units have removed the conveyor to allow more space inside the M992.  It is pretty cramped w/it in there.  Rounds weigh about 100 lbs each and can be hand carried pretty effectively.  Its a good workout.  They can also pass ammo and powder canisters out the side doors on both sides of the M992,

Thanks Gino, I wasn't sure there, I've seen a lot of models at shows with the wash slopped on really dark and thick, I like what you've got there.

Thanks for the info Gino. I did consider an ammo carrier but dismissed it. I am surprised we don't have something similar for the AS 90 as that only carries 48 rounds.
