TOXSO OTS (1/72) SCUD-B FINISHED (sans base)

Lesson 1. look very closely at the tire halves. while it appears the 3 slots are 120 degrees apart and the same size i don't think they are. sorta forced one, second and third went smoothly so i looked at the tread and saw the error on first, pried it apart and fixed it. same with fourth. there is an axle that needs to be inside due to a spacer on the one tire half. i just glued it since i don't want the wheels turning. also there are left side and right side tires and mounts so keep them segregated. when the slots are correct the fit is fine. this doesn't even qualify as an annoyance just a head's up and a nice early warning to moi to dry fit and RTFI.

second set of tires went together fine. no paint instructions for interior but am going with pale blue per DML kit. black chassis amnd khaki/sand exterior with white missile

there are 4 subsections along the chassis. the first and third have interiors and opening doors so they are awaiting a paint decision. this is the second section located behind the cab. for some reason they left the back of the storage boxes open. it probably wouldn't be seen in travel mode but would be in launch mode. i added some styrene, glued the tops on, and filled the gaps with white glue and a Q-tip.

Cool, Wayne!

Does this look like a new molding? Because I know there used to be a similar vehicle available that I built years ago. Pretty sure it was the same scale. What do you think?

Hey Karl

I suspect it's new because there is no flash and the parts fit nicely together. According to Scalemates, this is new but there was an older Polish ARMO 9K72 Elbrus M SCUD-1.

there are 4 "sections" to go on the frame and i could use white glue to attach the second and fourth (non crew sections) because the fit is so good. like my bowser there are some "why did they do that" areas but so far easily fixed. may have to mask some of the attachment areas so the paint doesn't make them too thick.

Looks like the windows are not plastic but thin clear document protecter material. should be alright at this scale.

if this goes well i will have to build my SS-25.

i hope they can fix the autospell or a bunch of us are going to look really stupid. Surprise

Gotcha, Wayne.

I've got one of those big 1/35 Scuds too, and from what I hear, they're a bear to build. I have an old color photo of an Iranian one in wicked-cool camo colors from Newsweek, believe it or not, and really am looking forward to finishing it eventually.

I'll be interested to see what you do with this one. Smile

Karl you had mentioned the 1/35 earlier. if the fit isn't that bad it beats spending $140 USD, especially when the SA-8 and PATRIOT are due.

i'm going with the Iraqi one for the GW1 GB. a sandy/khaki color which i may mix my own since it's so easy with Vallejo. aftet a base coat will lighten the color and do a top down spray and maybe darken it a tad for the doors and rear. all the doorsa open so i think i will go with the pale blue for some color. black chassis but sand hubs so the pin wash stands out. this is one of the "3rd section" interior walls for the control position. it's about 1.25 inches wide but nice detail.

i'll display it on a base but not sure how. JUST HAD A THOUGHT. someone just came out with 1/72 modern us soldiers so i could park this in a revetment, all the doors open, and an MH-60 helo on the ground near it.

I have some igood pics for camo for my SS-25 and already have a camo'ed BTR-80 done up as a security vehicle. probably put both in snow. hey it's Russia.

tried thinning the 3M Bondo with acetone before filling seams on the SCUD. looks good but i haven't painted the seams to check. will do that today. givern this is OTS i will use Tamiya fine surface primer instead of my usual. cost A LOT more but can use the HobbyLobby 40% coupons.

here is the missile and both sides of the control room (Section 3). closeups show what will be seen with the hatches open. picked up some Vallejo blue/gray which is a very light gray with a hint of blue. may add a bit of blue to it just to ad some color. missile will be pale gray instead of white and i have seen piucs where they are the same color as the TEL.

Yeah, that's definitely NOT the one that I built! That's some neat little detail in there!

I would also definitely do the scene with soldiers next to it to show of its impressive scale!

Looking good!

Thanks Karl. this has been really fun so far. got some priming done so i can start on painting the missile control section interiors. also started on the cab. the doors have sink wells on the inside as do some interior pieces so i just went nuts and puttied every one just in case. the doors will be seen, doubt the others would be but...

got the elevation assy done without breaking any handles. not sure what is going on at the rear. the instructions aren't clear and the DML instructions aren't any clearer.

First there were some sections that might be seen so i just added some "internal structure". the big hole i will explain shortly.

Obviously most of what i added won't be seen and will be black anyway and the erect missile will hide it BUT that's me. I did putty the bottom but you can still see some seam but it will be on a base so i didn't fix it. a point for not being totally obsessed with seams.

on pic 3 that shaft is suppose to go inside but doesn't seem to fit and doesn't seem to attach to anything. not clear in the instructions. i looked at where it could go and just drilled out a big hole. of course, as i don't have the mounts attached i eyeballed the path.

the missile still showed seams after priming so i tried some more sanding and scraping before repainting and maybe having to add putty. given how i do missiles, towed guns and RR guns, and locomotives one would think i have the cylinder seam thing down. HA!

Ooh, I hope that "hole" doesn't come back and bite ya in the uh-huh..lol.

That's like exactly something that I would do, but I have been there enough times to find out later that I put something on backwards or didn't quite line parts up correctly. Hope your luck is better!

hey Karl. since the first incident with the tire pins i have been doing multiple dry runs. the hole is completely hidden. found a couple of other areas that probably didn't need filling but it was easy enough to fix. got the tires and hubs painted. second go round on missile seam. will check in AM. all the other sink well fills look fine.think i will paint ther missile a pale gray/sand, something lighter than the vehicle but not light gray or white. some color. hardest part now is figuring out painting sequence since inside and outside are different colors.

So I've looked at a pile of pics of these things being "distressed" by dozers.

It seems to me that a lot of the ordinance itself, never mind the trucks, was painted local style with hand held air guns. And I do think some of the camo if any was a result of the dropping of stuff on the missile to mask green when the tan was shot.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

i think i'm going single colors on this. then again if i screw up the missile it's moot and the diorama will be MISSED OPPORTUNITY instead of SCUD FIND. picked up some OTS soldiers, they are tiny. hopefully i can modify a couple for sitiing down. not sure now if i am going to have an MH-60 or just a HUMVEE for the friendlies.

take two on missile seams wasn't much better. just stripped all the primer off and will start again on the seams. meanwhile i have started painting so should have som pics on Sunday. PS paint remover tatses awful.

OTOH all 8 wheels sit on the ground. i may add some weights inside the chassis. and i picked up the first of all the new kits i want, 1/35 BdW front end loader. something different. may end up in civilian attire for commercial trucks catagory, maybe yellow

got some more done. i put the control section together and had to work on outside seam. sanded promed repainted and didn't feather enough so resanded and reprimed and painted. another lesson learned. there is a decaled instrument panel in the compartment. obviously wheel wells aren't going to be seen so my rough fillls and sanding were good enough. decided to paint chassis black. wheels are fit tight, no glue.

saw this little bogger i missed. since i might have missile in launch mode, grabbed some styrene from the stash, cut, promed and painted. it is sand, i used white to show what i was doing.

also got the Elevator and Launcher assembled. had to take a deep breathe and easily pry the rear of the glued and painted Elevator to fit the Launcher.  also had st scrap down the Elevation piston and ream out the cylinder on the Transporter sop they would fit. this kit has some nicely fitting parts. kneeling dragon gunner shows size.

this is an unusual build for me because i know it will be on a base so some of the underside isn't even painted. the front cab fender wells had the same mold "holes" but this time i didn't even bother to fill them. the cab is a bit tricky. You build each side, glue one side to the engine cover, glue that to frame, glue other side and rear panel. Acetate windows were ok. I did scan them in so i could make new ones. bumper is tiht but i had a gap on the sides, my fault and easily filled in with 101 size. styrene. overall the front is a tad rougher than the rest. missile is just sitting there. i think i will paint parts of it a bit darker and other parts a bit lighter.

Glad to hear that your hole is hidden, Wayne, lol.

I would second the idea of painting the missile a different shade, kinda like it was painted from different paint stock than the launcher truck, which makes sense.

I can't even tell you how similar this model looks to the one that I built so many years ago, but then again, it was the same vehivle, lol. Tell me, does this one have black vinyl tubes for the lower rear hull-to-launcher?

Karl no tubing or instructions in the kit. the rear right side panel has the door on one piece attached to a solid block so i would have to cut the block off, cut all the rear lights and stuff from the block to glue on the new box,  and build an open box. i have been ponderinging doing that. right now it depends on whether i glued the back piece on it was a really tight fit.

i have a couole of pics showing all the plumbing

cold/flu is annoying. been taking it easy as i have guests coming in this weekend. well i pulled the back plate off. obviously it was a good tight fit because i didn't glue it on.

checking the plumbing it looks like 4 cables from left rear and 4 from right rear. the door panel on the right side doesn't have any cables coming out so it can be closed. i don't know where they attach to the missile but neither does anyone else who is likely to look. found some 28 guage and 22 guage dark annealed steel wire so 1 or 2 thicker per side and the rest thinner. have 100 feet of each so should be enough.

if i attach the wires i have no options on launch mode vs travel mode. OYOH i have one missile seam much netter than the other so that will be a consideration.

looks like i have to repaint the warhead on the scud which is good since i want to maje it lighter so will mix deset tan with dirty white. (did that and it looks nice). mixing paints is fun with Vallejo. had to make some adjustments to the wiring so i could get the erector fully extended. i think this is going to be an almost launch mode, ie the erecter is still holding the missile. still ponfering the diorama but would really like to have a helo involved in a SCUD hunt. perhaps a spec ops MH-6 except i have to cut out both right side doors.

scary thought, i asked my rau her opinion and than mentioned there are some new 1/35 ones i might look at. she just sighed, shook her head and walked away.

calling the SCUD done though i still need to build a revetment base and not sure how big it will be, depending on if it's going to be a diorama. i might have over weathered it but some of that may tone down on a sand base. it is Vallejo sand yellow with a raw umber oil wash followed by a pastel mix of yellow, orange, brown and light gray. instead of doing a lightened paint overspray on the top surfaces (ala Karl) this time i scrubbed the top with light gray pastel. it shows up depending on the light.

Killer finish, Wayne! I love the look---good for you trying the lighter coat on top. Hope you continue to push your own personal boundaries and find more satisfaction in your future builds! Really a great outcome here! Yes

Thank you.  i have the Trumpeter 1/35 too as well as 2 DMLs.

i find Vallejo lends itself to color modualtion since the dropper is the bottle. i also like mixing my own pastels as i can add a bit of color. getting good at desert bases. now for a snow base with 1/72 SS-25.
