2016 "Armor-Clad" Resolutions
Posted by SMJmodeler on Friday, December 18, 2015 12:52 PM

Guys: As we approach the New Year we're all probably resolving to change something-or-other in our personal lives. But how about we lighten things up and consider what we resolve to change on the hobby-side of our lives.  For example:

-What do you resolve: To-do, not-do or do differently on your next build?

-Are you impatient in a certain area and plan to change that behavior?

-Are you determined to try a kit from a different genre?

-Knock down the stash 10%, 50%, ?

-Swear NOT to buy another kit until the one on the workbench is complete?

-Post your first picture of a finished build?

-Compete at a local competition?

I think you get the idea...so who wants to go first?

I plan on doing an armour build and not use filters.

Make a dent in my 251 collection. One would be nice, two would be great.

Improve on my figures.

Build an urban dio.

SMJ - hate to disappoint you, but I don't do New Year's resolutions - I'm afraid of feeling really bad should I be unable to keep the word I gave to me, I hope you understand what I mean. But of course I have my plans - one of them is building more Vietnam-Era themed models! Happy new year in advance!

Bish: It's Off Topic on my part but I HAVE to get the the "low-down" on you and the filters.  I saw you call it the "F" word in a post to doog and I sense some hostility here. What gives?...do tell.

BTW:  How about you start 2016 with a "filterless" 251(from the stash) with a couple fig's in Berlin?Big Smile

lol, well, there is definatly no hostility, just a differance of opinion. I have nothing against the use of filters, modulation and so on, or those who use them. But i do have concerns that people might be useing them and not realiseing why.

For my own part, i have fallen into the trap that i argue so much against, namely doing filters because thats what is expected. Ever since i started useing them, i could not see the results that people say they give. Other than creating a grimy look, i can't see what else they do.

I made the decision to go filterless after the Chally, but i did see Gino's post on his M2 Bradely build, and i think i am pretty much in his camp.

Like Gino, i have spent time on the real thing, and i guess we just see it from a differant perspective.

I am to try and move away from the artistic as much as possable and be as realistic as possable. My current modern aircraft build i plan on doing without adding a wash to the panel lines.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

My ultimate goal is to finish more kits. But, I want to see my skill progressively improve on each of those kits.

Bish: Brain Fart on my part!Black Eye  I confused you with HeavyArty on the whole filter thing.  It was the doog who used the "F" word on HeavyArty's thread. Sorry. But what's funny is that you're in the same camp!Wink

Is there an anti-filter movement out there that I'm unaware of?Zip it!

I don't do resultions... New Year or otherwise. I have never  tried filters... not in a modeling sense... ;) but perhaps this year I may give them a go. I'm with Bish and Arty on having served on AFVs, I don't go for many of the artistic visual fads that are currently popular in modeling. While they do add a visual wow factor, I hardly find them realistic. At least in my experience.

lol, the inevitable backlash against "Filters", "The F word", et al, is nothing more than a reiteration of the Never-Ending Modeling Dispute: "How Much Weathering is 'Realistic'?". Of course there will be a backlash from the traditionalists and the "Realists" vs the "Artists". [exculptory disclaimer here: not that "realistic" is NOT "artistic", just not in the "Artistic" sense--does that make sense?! Hmm] It's nothing that hasn't been argued 100 times or more in the last year, and it will never be resolved. There are just some people to whom the use of "artistic" means of rendering finishes is not "realistic", and that's no different than people who like Modern Impressionism vs Landscapes paintings.

Now, as far as my goals for the next year, I plan on winnowing down my Auto stash. That's about it. Smile

I've already started finishing some of the started projects I have had on the bench for awhile. I hope to be able to model more consistently throughout the year in 2016 than I was able to this year. That is about the only "resolution" I can make. I don't do well at scheduling out builds one after the other. I can only stay at the bench if I'm working on something that piques my interest.

First Karl....past year....I think that argument has gone on forever. It is a matter of taste!. Now as far as the comparison I thought you would use Hard Rock and Jazz....both have similar elements but in the end are very different.....both good but different.

As for the New Year.... just enjoy....I am beyond goals....just need to be content! (sometimes that means just staring at the stash!!)

What a great statement.  May I have your permission to post this in my modeling area.  I have on occasion just had a cup of tea, listened to music and just stared at my modest stash. And I do want to work on just being content. Well said sir.

I did forget to respond to the original post. Sorry.

I am going to build a tank in 2016, and I'm going to post a picture of it. I just hope I don't enjoy it too much.

I could care less about "resolutions".

This is a relaxing hobby for me. I learn and grow as I go along. Been at it for over 50 years now and still love it.

Once I get my new hobby bench configured, I hope to finish two kits that were started last year: Dragon Pz III and Dragon Tiger I Late.

I might also branch out into floaties. I've eye-balled a Trumpter Maryland BB. I haven't built a ship in 20 years.

Interesting argument between "realistic" and "Artistic". I'm still trying to balance both and achieve "Believable" lol.

I'm still resolved to find a real job for the new year lol.

I hope to build more models and buy an airbrush. I just completed my first model alone and I hope to eventually build models nice enough to post pictures of. I also need to stop buying models until I build more. I'm hoping to build my first panther as well.

I've already resolved to:

Buy more stuff next year than I'll ever have a chance to build

Start more stuff than I finish

Eat more unhealthy food and exercise less than I should

I think I can keep all of those....

seems similar to the "realistic" non dark rust tracks and the "artistic" rsuty tracks. unless i am doing an actual picture, i lean toward the artistic, even if i am building for a contest. and i am annoyed about doing things because "the judges" of which i have been one expect it.

i think next year i am going to ease up on my pin washes and not to oil filters. instead, especially with Vallejo paint, do some color modulation with a drop or two of lightener or darkener. i do intend to work more with weathering pwders, especially making my own with pastels.

and i promise not to rust modern stainless steel exhaust systems on my trucks. though realistic road grime is still vexing me but it's fun trying to figure it out.

Guys: Thanks to those of you that have chimed in so far...it's fun to read your real specific goals and your not so specific ones too, like "be content".

I started this thread because I had two goals of my own:

#1: Be willing to tackle some scratch-build work: I used to consider scratch-build a four letter word and HATED the idea mostly because it added to the build time (delayed the weathering).  I hope that will change with some successful basic upgrades.

#2: Add more PE: Be more patient and "put-it-aside" when the PE gets frustrating...rather than the "screw-the-PE" attitude I seem to get when the parts are sticking to the tweezers and my fingers are crusty from the CA glue! Angry

Maybe if I combine redleg's motto of "just enjoy" during those necessary "put-it-aside" times. ...hmmm.Hmm

I avoided a ,lot of scratchbuilding for years. But a couple of years back i did two builds that i felt needed a lot extra that was not available as AM, so i wnet in for some heavy scratchbuilding. I found it much easy that i had expected, thoguh more time consuming. But it was certainly nice to know i had done that extra myself.

My 2016 goal is to finish at least two of the kits I have started but shelved for various reasons.  This should be a reasonal goal especially if I start to regularly sit down at the work bench for 3 to 6 hours per week.

I plan to finish my third kit :)
Build to buy ratio currently 2-15.
(tossed away 6 that just did not turn out right so maybe more like 8-15 with 6 fails)
From FiFo point of view first up should be the Sturer Emil but I guess I will give that one a miss as well and try to focus on my groving Tiger stash.

Would love to try OD on a Scherman as well.

Zack

...I went in for some heavy scratchbuilding...I found it much easier than I had expected...

Bish: I had the same somewhat pleasant experience for the scratchwork on my M4 HST. I'm thinking a miterbox would sure be helpful though...hopefully SantaGift will bring me one!

Sandbox: 2 builds for 2016 sounds like a realistic/ do-able goal.

Sackgasse:  That buy-to-build ratio is a serious-stash-in-the-making.Wink  Can't go wrong with a Tiger or Sherman on the build list!
