The M110A2 was a later version of the M110 and the A2 was not used in Vietnam. The original M110 with its short barrel is the correct version for Vietnam. The major difference in the kits is the barrel. I don't know anyone who has the short barrel as a separate item. You may want to look at picking up an old M110 kit on ebay.

Eduard makes a nice photo etch set for the M110. You can also look for AFV club 155mm/8inch ammunition set.

Here are some other details setting up artillery.

Hi,thanks,I bought the m110a2 off eBay for £15.00,I noticed that there is a few different ones on eBay but it would have cost me more than double to get one as they were priced at the £20 mark plus the same for postage,I wish italeri would release that kit across here in blighty.

Hello!

Gino would surely correct me here, but I thought of fitting a barrel of a M115 howitzer to the M110 chassis - could that work?

Long time ago I've built a model of a M110 in 1:72:

Hi,cheers for the reply,I'm trying to find an m115 on eBay to see what I might need.I'm also wondering if I could convert the kit barrel or would that be a nightmare.

I'm not that familiar with artillery as we only had M-113s and M-706s in the Air Force, but wouldn't a piece of aluminum or brass tubing work?  Then just put a canvas dust cover on the end.

Yes, the barrel from an M115 Long Tom from AFV Club can be swapped out to backdate the M110A2 to an M110.  They had the same barrel.

...wouldn't a piece of aluminum or brass tubing work?  Then just put a canvas dust cover on the end.

No, the barrel is tapered and flared, so a straight piece of tubing won't work.

I'd buy the M115 and make a copy of the barrel.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Hummm....my younger brother is slightly off (a rare event)....the M115 8 inch towed howitzer was not the "Long Tom". The M59 155mm gun, which was on the same carraige  and upper assembly was known as the "Long Tom".

The M110/M107 used the same upper assemby/gun mount as the M115/M59 towed. The M07 was upsized to 175mm while the 8 inch was just transferred to the self propelled carriage.

Both were hell of a weapon, especially the M107!

Thanks for keeping me straight Mike.  I meant the M115, not the 155mm M59 Long Tom.  Long day at the Naval Academy w/the crew team.  Lots of fun though.

No, just to clarify, you want the M115 kit, not the M59 Long Tom.

Hello Phil!

the thing is Hannibal already has a kit giving you an -A2 out of the box, but needs an A-nothing variant, that would be correct for the Vietnam war. The Verlinden kit you show (thanks a lot, by the way) was relevant in times when Italeri had a kit out giving you only the A-nothing variant while -A1 and -A2 were state of the art.

So thanks for sharing, and have a nice day

Cheers guys, the AFC club kit seems to be out of stock at most stores, possibly out of production, will just have to build the rest of the kit and leave the gun Until I source a kit or until someone does a barrel as an aftermarket conversion part.

I can't thank you guys enough for your input.happy building.

hi pawel .

I misunderstood everything , I thought that hannibal the italeri kit MAD DOG m107 ref 248 and wanted to install the kit of the barill to make a M110 version .

because italeri also took out the box of M110A 2 ref 291 .

then with the barill of M115 , we make a version really of the model in vietnam ?

Allright, so we've got several vehicles with very similar chassis, but different weapon:

M107 - 175mm gun. Kit by Italeri, out of production. Served in Vietnam.

M110 - old 203mm howitzer (short barrel). Kitted by Italeri, out of production. This one served in Vietnam

M110A1 - newer 203mm howitzer, long barrel. Can be done using Verlinden kit.

M110A2 - newest 203mm howitzer, long barrel, muzzle brake. Kitted by Italeri, recently re-released.

M578 - recovery vehicle with a crane instead of a gun. Can be done using conversion sets by Verlinden or Perfect Scale. Also served in Vietnam.

Hope it helps, have a nice day

As an Arty Forward Observer when there was a plethora of arty support available (105, 155, the M109 self propelled, 175, 8in.) I can honestly say the 175 looked formidable but I found it to be the least accurate of the big guns. Meanwhile the 8in. was extremely accurate and deadly, as were the other two calibers. My favorite though will always be the 105: accurate, easily deployable, good range, rounds per minute, lightweight rounds and a multitude of fuses and warheads. Big Smile

Hi guys,

Just checked eBay and tamiya have rereleased the italeri 107(long barrel). They did the same with the 109 a while back, hopefully they will release the short barrel version soon as I'm not having any luck with my kit building this year.

Also having been an FO in Vietnam, I can assure TigerII that I wouldn't be here to write this if it wasn't for the Model 110A1 & its super-well-trained fire direction & gun crews working on what turned out to be one very noisy night.  Less than five minutes from contact to first-round-on-target, every adjustment on-target, and not a single short round even though firing directly over my head (proven by my never having forgotten what the whistle sounds like).  BTW, I think the Watervliet Arsenal machinists need a thanks too for their skill in making our barrels shoot so true.

I've been looking all over for the Testor model which looks more authentic to me than the Italeri (in their pictures) but the few Testors I've seen advertised were already sold.  Does anyone know of any selling on-line right now?
