Thank you for all the help!  I got the mirrored friul tracks from a friend getting out of the armor building and would like to use those. Dragon's 6600 kit seems to be right as it gives the option to use mirrored tracks.  I'm still researching which version to make as the kit has three options.

Hi Phil, thank you for pointing this out.  My mistake was based on the chart associated with 35227 over at Scalemates, and none of the lineage indicated new tool.

It is a dated kit, the original tooling is from 1969, while this particular boxing had some new parts added (1998).

This kit bears little resemblance to the old '60's kit - the breakdown is completely different. It's based on the 90's new tool kits.

About the mirrored tracks, from what I've read only the first 20 production Tigers had these.  This style was abandoned because it was too much trouble to carry two types of spare tracks on the vehicles.

Beginning late August 1942, chassis numbers 250011 thru 250020 were indeed delivered to the 501st earmarked for Tunisia.  Question is, did these ten Tigers retain these original tracks, or swap them out before shipping to Africa in November.

I'll do some more research and decide.  Both kits should work with Friulmodel Alt-116, as I have a box of those.  Those are the mirrored tracks for the initial version.  I currently have Dragon's 6820 Tunisia Early Tiger 1, so I'll probably try the 6600.

You need to decide what you want to build sine the vehcles are actually very different.
6600 and 6608 are both excellent kits;

As Jack allredy suggested, define decent ;)
The Tamiya Kit is a nice build, goes together well.
But decent in terms of accuracy - it is not.

Been offline for a while and am not up to speed with the most recent releases but for accuracy I would go for the Dragon # 6600 for the Initial.

If what you are looking for is the T1 mid I suggest Dragon #6700.

It depends on what decent means to you.  Being Tamiya, it will be an enjoyable kit to build, shouldn't be any problems.  It is a dated kit, the original tooling is from 1969, while this particular boxing had some new parts added (1998).

Read here and decide if the inaccuracies are not a dealer breaker, or if you want to incorporate some or all them into the build:
