8.8cm shell boxes
Posted by Recon89 on Friday, January 13, 2017 10:43 AM

Working on a Nashorn and wanting to spread around some shell boxes around the diorama. There are two types of boxes in the AFV Club kit for the 8.8 cm shells. I'm a little confused on this. Can someone tell me the difference in use of the round metal and wood boxes. Was any type of shell carried in both in the round metal box and the wood box, or does it make a difference in what type of shell was carried in either box? Also, the instructions say the round metal boxes can be either dark yellow or German grey and the wood boxes can be either wood brown or flat black. Is there any significance in this? Can't seem to find any info on the net.

Only problem with the AFV kit is all the ejector pin marks on the inside of the wood box pieces if you want to model them open.

Thanks.

The metal canisters are the first type of container, in the late war period they were replaced by the wooden crates. Since they were durable, dirt and waterproof, they could be reused, often for other purposes. The color is actually either a very dark green, (as this one is) or Dunkelgelb. Color photos of the metal cases are hard to find;

Here is the single-shell wooden box, in either natural wood or dark green. These 1/6 scale model photos are a pretty good representation:

The HE boxes are marked with a yellow band on the corner edge, the AP with a white, plus the appropriate stenciling of course.

There is also a 2-shell wooden box;

This example has every other slat omitted, to conserve materials, construction time and weight, earlier versions were fully encased. These can be found in either natural wood or dark green finish. I have not seen them painted black, but I suppose this is possible.

Thanks Ixion for the info. These are minor details in the scope of things, but I try to be at least semi-correct on items. I have not seen the boxes with the slats missing. Might have to scratch build some of these.

Errata; Revisiting the site I previous posted, there is indeed a grey steel case;

The same color coding is used on the canisters as on the boxes, a yellow band and stenciling for HE, white for AP. I also came across a steel Flak shell case with a 1945 date stamp, so these at least remained in production. I don't know if the KwK cases did however. I don't have a whole lot of information on these and there isn't much online, as you have already noticed.

And then there are these boxes, under new ownership, which appear to be in camo;
