The metal canisters are the first type of container, in the late war period they were replaced by the wooden crates. Since they were durable, dirt and waterproof, they could be reused, often for other purposes. The color is actually either a very dark green, (as this one is) or Dunkelgelb. The HE boxes are marked with a yellow band on the corner edge, the AP with a white, plus the appropriate stenciling of course.

This example has every other slat omitted, to conserve materials, construction time and weight, earlier versions were fully encased. These can be found in either natural wood or dark green finish. I have not seen them painted black, but I suppose this is possible.
