Quick question Karl about the barrel.  I’m new to armor modeling and I’ve found the germans subjects to be the most interesting thus far.  May I ask why this tank has a black barrel?  Was this a powder coating or perhaps a primer coat indicating this isn’t the original barrel to this vehicle?   I have a kit or two that I’d like to mimic this look!  Also,  I have an FSM issue from a few months back that has one similar to this?  Was that your kit? 

 

Not sure about the magazine kit you're referring to, but it's been firmly established at this point that when a German tank barrels were primed with a heat-resistant primer that was very dark grey. NOT "primer red" as used to be the belief. Newer barrels were often seen in this bare dark grey primer, until painted, if they were painted at all. Incidentally, there is also evidence that in some late model Jagdpanther and possibly other MANN (?) tanks that there was gray primer used on some parts, mostly mantlets. The red primer was used on the hulls, and was often used as a bare camouflage color with other colors, such as on my model here. :)

Mike, no, no plans for a base. I am short on room in my display cases, so I'm not really doing many dio-style bases anymore.

Pawel, I think the difference is that I have a new camera that I'm using and it's a little harsh in the color palette. I am still learning to work with it, but it's a big change from my old reliable one. I actually held back a little on actual chipping and wear on this one, so it's interesting to hear your opinion.

Hunter, yes I used silly putty for the masking. Mr Von Logan helped me in this build with his loyal companionship throughout it. :)

Mike, yes, happy to know that too. Sorry you didn't get to visit the interior of the castle, it's pretty insane But only the first floor is finished, believe it or not. The rest is literally empty. King Ludwig was murdered before he could finish it, some said for spending so much of the kingdom's money on his vanity project.

I'm just building my first piece of armor and your work is really quite inspiring! Maybe if I had another lifetime I could approach the quality of the work you've displayed here but even another 74 years would probably not be enough.

OT, nice to know there are more atheists around than just me.

More OT: When I took my whirlwind tour of Europe in the summer of 2007 about the only disappointment I had was not having time to visit the castle itself. Our bus stopped below the castle so I had a few minutes to grab a snapshot from below but, looking at the model you've built and seeing photos online, I realize I've only captured a small section of Ludwig II's homage to Wagner.

Man oh man that is one awesome looking build. The paint and weathering are beyond words. I hope to have half that talent on my builds. Do you mask or use sully putty when you paint your camo patterns? Again Karl, absolutely stunning work sir. How do we know that Mr. Von Logan did not produce this build? LOL

It's been a long time! I see you have been busy!

I wish I had your practice in weathering! But somehow when I look at this StuG it somehow looks overdone to me. Might also be the question of background, I have a feeling that the model would look better if the photos were a little darker.

There are also details that I like - like those rust streaks or the beaten up jerry can.

Funny thing, I'm building something turretless right now, too - the WIP is in the forums as well.

its been a while, but great comeback post!  Meanwhile I have enjoyed some of your articles in FSM mag.  Was thinking about your castle build just last week since I went to Gulliver's gate in NYC and they had a miniature of that castle there too.

I like the color gradations in the camouflage.  Nicely done!

No, Karl, I have no idea who you are lol. It has been a while.

This build is fantastic. It definitely has that late production look to it and that weathering is lovely.

Any plans for figures and/or a base??
