I strongly recommend visiting www.AndysHobbyHeadquarters.com and check out his videos of building US armor.  He will show you how to achieve exactly that which you want to learn.  It is a free site, and I have learned a lot by watching.  Good luck!

You can also link from your Facebook photos on your page, as these are. All photos are of the same tank at different points in time.

I use Flickr to host my photos. Here is a post I made late last night for someone else who was looking to build an M60A3TTS.

In the 8th ID, we kept M60A3TTS tanks until the summer of 1989. My company (A/5-77 AR) was the last company in the last battalion in the last division to finally turn in the old A3s. The last unit was the oversized tank company from the Berlin Brigade who transitioned right after we road marched to Honhenfels.

We used a modified MERDC pattern. It was more like the NATO 3-color scheme, but using the MERDC colors instead. If you took an old Tamiya M60A3TTS 4-color scheme (use the brown, black and green, omit the sand) and instead of the black squiggles, make those blotches instead, you'd about have the scheme right.

Every tank looked different, but kind of similar. We had crews paint the entire tank forest green. Then platoon sergeants and the motor sergeants chalked off the brown and black areas, and then the crews painted them by hand or with air guns. Extra duty personnel continued to paint them after duty hours so the thoroughness of the paint schemes varied greatly.

My tank was painted at least twice in the year and a half I was the platoon leader (Dec 87 to May/Jun 89). My avatar is in the color of the tank the spring/summer of 1988. The first photo is of the same tank taken during REFORGER 1988 (September). The bottom photo was taken at Hohenfels the Spring of 1989 by my platoon sergeant. Yes, that's me whizzing off the side of the tank.

Well, I am definitely interested in the skills of adding scratches, wear, mud, weather effects, ect., but I suppose it will be a good thing to ask them in time when I get to those spots in the build.  I appreciate the offer of info, and I will definitely take advantage of it...soon!

Also, one more thing, what image service do you use to have links to post pics with?

I apparently need that to share pics on the site...I suppose I could use dropbox, but I am looking for a more specific solution.

Thanks for your kindness and sharing,

    Ben

Pawel

Well, if you want a starship you have to do the -A2... Nah, just kidding!

Do you have any photos of the real thing?

So you have the one from AFV Club, right? That's a beauty of a kit, if a little complicated...

Now if you ask some more specific questions like how to do scratches like those? Or how do I make this part look dusty - I think I and other people can give you pointers.

I've been trying to expand on the interior AFV Club gives us - but the project got stuck for now - but I hope some fine day I will have that interior for a Patton...

If you want, here's my unfinished build of one, maybe you can get something out of it...:

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Thanks, Pawel, I am sure I will have some questions when I get it going soon!

I looked at your work and it is amazing.  I am new to the weathering effects, so I will be asking about that for sure after I get some things rolling. I LOVE the detail of the armor on the tank with the rough texture on the exterior.  I also went all out and got third-party tracks for it.  Looks like they will take me a month to paint, put together, and weather then as well!

As for the starship, I am currently working on the last stages of the TOS 1/350 enterprise, have started the base painting for the 1701 refit, have the Greased Lightning body to finish for my daughter and a jeep to finish up for the wife.  Today I am finishing the electronics for my son's Iron Man figure (The first large size figure I have EVER done), and hopefully doing the gold coat on him.

The weather is finally cooperating with the temps so I can get back on my airbrushing...so I am full steam ahead!

I look forward to getting your feedback and experience good Sir!

Thanks again!

A couple of us spent some quality time on A3s. I was a platoon leader of 2nd platoon, A Company, 5/77 Armor in Mannheim, Germany back in the day. I became the company XO when we transitioned to the early M1A1s in 1989.

Starting M60A3 MBT AFV Model

All,

I am about to start an M60A3 tank that I was on for 3 years in the Army back in the elder days...I have waited to get one and build it (I am usually doing cars and starships) and am excited to get it going.  I am here to get as much advice on doing a good armor model with the wear and tear so I can attempt to recreate the tank I operated while I was in.  I look forward to getting any tips and/or tricks to making it look as realistic as I can. I have the AK chipping and mud effects sets and am looking forward to putting this together with the skills I have acquired over the years. Thanks in advance for any info I can milk from the community!  I will definitely be pulling out some of my FS mags to do some reading on the subject, but there is nothing like communicating with the amazing crowd that puts their heart and soul into these creations.

   Your fellow modeler,

             Ben
