Sacrificial Patton: Monogram 1/35 M48A2
Posted by NitroX on Friday, January 28, 2022 5:52 PM

A local craft store had their models on sale 40% off, so I picked up a few for practicing on. This will be my first I've assembled in very long time. Got this tank along with a Revell 1/48 A-10 Warthog. Were cheap, and if I mess them up beyond repair, I can go get another cheap model. Figured this would be better to start on, then move up to the higher tier models down the road.

Built it as per instructions. No custom work except for some putty, and won't be using any 3rd party addons. Painted entire model with Vallejo Olive Drab, and painted the rubber on the tires with Mr Color Tire Black. So this will be my "sacrificial lamb" so to speak. Will use it to practice with washes, chipping, and applying pigments for weathering\usage effects on the body and tracks.

I think that is a great idea. I will be doing the same thing when I get my workspace done. I have alot to do before I get to that stage but I will get some sacrificial kits to start with.

I've got a built one of these from my boyhood days of the 70s that I repainted in a pseudo modern MERDC scheme in 1984 after I spent a summer learning how to tank on an M48A5.

I bought one of these at the clearance aisle of Hobby Lobby for $7.50 and used the ancient Lo Models conversion to make it the West German M48A2GA2.

These are solid kits that hold up well despite being nearly 70 years old (I think it was originally released in 1956).

Funny:

See, Great minds do think alike! My "Practice Patton" from over thirty years ago( that same kit) has been stripped and repainted so many times it is beginning to look worn out. It works though!

hobby lobby kits are the perfect candidates for experimenting, especially when you can get them 40% off. Nice job so far and welcome to the forum. Welcome Sign

Great idea! It's always good to try stuff out on a paint mule instead of possibly messing up a good model.

Been really busy and I finally had a few minutes to spend on this model. This is the first time I've tried to use washes and pigment. Did the tracks, and started on the lower hull (that still needs some work). Then I will move up to the top section. Not half bad for my first try. Big Smile
