Flak 36 Completed! Entry to Towed Gun GB (Warning: Lots of Pics.)
Posted by Dwight Ta-ala on Monday, May 10, 2004 6:30 PM
Here is my entry to the Towed Gun Group Build, a Tamiya 1/35 Flak 36/37 Gun. I built this kit out of the box (as usual) to simulate the Flak36 version of the gun. I did not make any adjustments to correct any flaw or inaccuracies of the kit except from the scratchbuilding of parts that I lost. I have previously showed the pics of the completed gun in the Towed Gun GB thread but this is the first time that I will be showing this in its completed form in a diorama.Wink [;)]

I have seen a lot of dioramas of an 88 in or within the vicinity of the church. I somehow got interested in doing my own version of what seems to be already a “cliché” as far as 88 dios are concerned. Well I know that you have seen lots of dios like this already and I hope you don’t mind seeing another one. He-he-he.

I was previously planning to include a camouflage net tent for the gun but upon seeing how crowded it is now, I decided not to proceed with it.

Anyway, here are the pics:

Some close-up views:

The Base:

The base was basically scratchbuilt from readily available and ordinary materials. For reference, here are the materials I used:

Wooden Base: Chopping Board
Ground: Wall Putty
Church Ruin: Foamboard and Cardboard
Cobblestone Walk: Foamboard
Rubble: Smashed flower pot mixed with some stones
Turf: Woodland Scenics
Tall Grass: Old paintbrush

Here are the pics of the base prior to the fixing of the model and the figures:

I may still add some details inside the church but that could come later.

I guess I can wear that badge now. Comments are welcome as always.

WOW!!! Those are some of the best figures I've seen before! Gotta get that 88 kit, or maybe it just looks so good that it makes we want to get it right away! I like the church, it looks awsome! All around good job!!!! Yeah, Shep Paine made an 88/church dio too, but it got disqualified at the Nueremburg toy fair because the jugdes thought it wasn't tasteful or something like that... But Nice job, glad you had so many pics of high quality of a high quality dio! Great job!!!!

rebelreenactor: Thanks.

Armor Master: Thanks for the nice words. The figures are actually not so great and looked funny. It's a very old kit and the figures are not at par with say Dragon's current ones but overall I think that it went well together. Just lots of tiny pieces though.

Amazing dio Dwight. Right up there with all your other quality builds. I really like the church and your attention to detail is incredible.

Well, I know the figures are awful (the molding-we have crisper and well-molded figs now) but I liked the paint job and shading/highlights. Overall good.
BTW: it's Armormaster, but it's ok-happens alot...

Sorry Ryan, I did miss that one. There, I corrected it already.

Anyway, I used Tamiya Field Grey Acrylic (darkened with a little Flat Black) as basecoat and drybrushed it with Artist's Acrylic (in tubes). This is the first time I used artist's acrylics for drybrushing because I thought that they were too thick. But I guess there is always a first for everything. Thanks.

Dwight,

AWSOME... I love the look of the 88s You have done wonderful with this old kit. It just goes to show that even an out of the box kit can look great. I like it all the weathering, the dio all of it... A+

You say the sidewalk is out of foam? Is that the dense carving foam? I have a bunch of that but have yet to try it out.

Again great work...

As per the GB, very nice job.
WHen you say foamboard for the cobblestone walk, can you elaborate on that a little. Not too sure what you mean by 'foamboard'. Is it the pink insulation foam or something totally different?

Very nice diorama, Dwight. You are really getting good at this scale modeling stuff..! I'm very impressed by the church ruins, as I really like seeing something else that the usual Verlinden stuff..! I do hope you just did not break your wife's flower pot for this base, though..! LOL I'd never do that! Evil [}:)]

The 88 and the trailer and the figures are superb.

Looks great Dwight!
Like the planks under the rear legs of the mount, was the crew looking for a little extra depression on the gun?

Terrific job, Dwight!

You don't need to build a big diorama with lots of figures to be involved in the group build, by the way. Just a gun! Any scale. All are still welcome, and will be until the group build closes on July 1.

M1: I am glad you like it. Thanks.

Thundergod: You are way too kind but thanks anyway.Smile [:)]

Phroosh: Believe me I have been looking forward to seeing this finished for the last two months!Big Smile [:D] Thanks. I am glad that I finally got the time and urge to finish it.

Build: Thanks. The first time I took pictures outside at the terrace and I got good light. Expect more pictures from the terrace from now on.Wink [;)]

Wildwilliam: Ssssshhhhhh. Don't mention about the ship for the Mrs. (It's still not done yet.) Although she has asked me already why I was able to finish this one first when I am just sneaking it between the work on the ship.Big Smile [:D] Well...I just shook my head and said..."the truth is out there..." He-he-he.

jimq: Thanks, too. Well, my cheap camera still gets the job done.

Kennethc/Zokissima: Thanks. The foamboard I was referring to is basically foam compressed with two sheets of thin but stiff paper on both sides. Outside it looks like an ordinary board like illustration board but if you look at the sides you can see the foam. It is light and soft to cut unlike illustration board. It comes in different thickness like 3mm, 6mm etc. It is commonly used for architectural models. It comes in black or white (as far as I know)

Abastyr: Thanks for the compliments.

Erush: Thanks, bro. How's the Long Tom coming?Big Smile [:D]

DJ: No way. The dog knocked the flower pot down. From that point on the pot is of no use so I powdered it. Strange though, we don't have a dog. Big Smile [:D] Thanks.

Claymore: Thanks. You are right. The gun is quite loose on the vertical plane. It keeps drooping down. Anyway I don't want to glue it place so I just let it be as of the time being.

Larry: Big Smile [:D] Sorry about all the distractions. He-he-he. I was really expecting somebody to say "get that gun off the base". LOL. Well, anyway thanks for the motivation. If you haven't started the Towed Gun GB, I wouldn't have the interest of doing it. Thanks again for the support.

LQ2: You said. Approve [^]Actually I am just glad I was able to get it off the workbench after starting it 2 months ago. (A record of sorts for me...please insert claps here).Big Smile [:D]. Remember last week when we were talking and I was saying that I need to get the dio base done.Tongue [:P] Thanks.

ShermanFirefly: Thanks. Not exactly the best thing that could happen to a sherman but hey, the allies did have the 17pdr.Wink [;)]

Thanks all. I really appreciate you giving a piece of your mind on my work.
