SdKfz 251/1 Crew????
Posted by senojrn on Saturday, May 22, 2004 2:47 PM
Hey, I'm building a SdKfz 251/1 in a diorama and wanted to know how many personnel were staffed ina typical crew for the personnel carrier version?? I know there was a driver, and maybe a co-driver/radio operator, but what about a gunner or two??? ANY help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks and happy modeling!!

P.S. If it matters the setting will be approx. 1942 Russian Front GrossDeutschland Div! Thanks again!

Dragon have a crew set out with driver, gunner, radio operator and officer, but the halftracks were just like taxis and may have only needed 2

I'm pretty sure that it could hold up to 9 or something. the dragon kit is very nice, but if your building Tamiyas SdKfz 251/1 c, then there will be some fitting.

Crew of 1, the driver. squad leader had the right seat and the rest of the squad in the rear. On early models the radio was on the right wall immediately behind the squad leader's seat it was moved on the ausf. C to the dashboard in front of the seat so he could operate it without being a contortionist. Squad members would operate the MG(s) or the driver if the squad was dismounted.

I was looking through my stuff and found two photos of 251 C's on parade someplace in the early war years and there are ten men standing in the back. They look like sardines or very good friends, but there's ten of them. Of course there's a driver as the vehicles are moving, but both of the front vision blocks are open. Can't tell if there is a commander in the shot gun seat or not.
