You can get rid of your dead spots by making your road an s-curve. Straight shapes (your current road) are a design no-no. Very plain and establishes a symatry that will divide your base. By making your road an s-curve you build visual interest. It will make the road seem longer, more rural and not divide your base in half. You can still elevate it with your mound and because of the s-curve create more "mystery" and hidden views that could hold ambush prospects. Sort of "whats just around the corner?" This will create visual tension in the scene and draw the viewer in. Will make the base look bigger than it is too without taking up any more room than you already planned. Your foiliage will be spread out and won't create a visual competition with your model and figures. You could on the other hand, use the foiliage as a backdrop to highlight your model and figures, say a stand of bamboo?
Gino brings up a good point in that if you are interested in historical accuracy then it should be right. If not, call it SOCOM in the jungle. This could be any jungle in any country that may still have surplussed american equipment that was liberated by your SEAL team. No foul, and no one can gig you on historical accuracy......if it matters to you. If it does then I'd say try to back date your existing vehicle or rethink your design element.
Good luck with it and post some pics either IP or when its done.
