T-34 & Ftuil Tracks?
Posted by glweeks on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 8:47 PM
I've got the chassis ready. wheels on, celluclay and paint done so now it's time to build those tracks (Fruil.).Confused [%-)]. The two part question: 1. I know there's several "other" ways to build this track than the instructions. Who"s done it and would you please share the info. with me?
2. I'm thinking of painting the tracks burnt metal as a base, then Rustall and the contact area just metal (it'll be on cobblestones as a base). Anybody really love the way their t-34 tracks came out? Would you please share your painting/ weathering secrets? I'll be using enamel (and pastells later), dust/dirt is already airbrushed on the hull.Bow [bow]
Later, I'm off to make a BLT with homegrown tomatoes chased by a beer. Thanks..... G.L.
(yeah I'm playin" with colors)

G.L. I usally paint my tracks with steel as the base, then while wet I take rust color and aply while wet.The rust is a light wet brush not heavy on the paint. While the steel is still wet I brush on the rust hard, working it in good. This provides a good mixture of steel and rust. The steel will show more.I do this on the outside of the tracks and after it has had a few mins to dry I take a very thin out wash of flat black.I go over the tracks outside with it esspecailly the edges that will hit the ground. This causes the steel to bleed throught giving it that used effect of a dual shine. The inside of the tracks I do the oppisite as the outside.Using steel as my base coat and light wet brush of flat black, make sure you work it in good. This will cause the steel to show in a dual effect.I don't even wash it down with a rust wash do to the insides are always clean of rust due to the road wheels.Digger

I don't use the Friul supplied wire (save it to detail the kits). Instead I use .020 brass wire and put the tracks together according to the directions in the box.

Instead of painting, i use blacken it. Be sure to wash the track before with some soap, then rinse and finally rinse with denatured alcohol solvent to take the remaining grease off. Googd think about Blacken It is that it waters for you.
