I found the same problem. I have the DML IIC DAK kit ( I plan on building a Polish campaign IIC at some stage) which has both types of idler wheels but only one set of rims. Like you I used a circular template and cut rims using 010 sheet styrene. I can't speak highly enough of the rest of the Eduard kit though as it is really thorough.
I have also modified the road wheels as the bolts were recessed and not raised as in the Tamiya kit. Initially I drilled them out, but I wasn't happy with that and have found a suitable replacement by using some spare PzIV hubs out of my spares box and replacing the originals - slightly oversized, but barely noticeable.
I am using the DML track links - I have the Model Kasten tracks as well but I will save those for the IIC in the hope I do not have to cut off the drive sprocket teeth and individually realign them. So far so good.
I have just ordered the Osprey book on Light Panzers (couldn't help myself) in the hope of there being a cutaway diagram. (it would appear so from the cover).

Ed, How much room do they take all together?? I printed off a bunch of them before the site went down, but not sure I got all of them.

Thanks. I really did enjoy doing this guy! One thing I found that was really too bad about the Eduard set is that when they redesigned it from the one shown in the article, they left out the rings for the idler wheels. It's kind of funny because when I was reading the article for the first time, one of the first things that really stood out to me was the look of the idlers!
I managed to find and pick up one of the older sets. I measured the inside and outside diameters of the rings and then used a circle cutter to cut them out of a piece of .005 plastic. (I'd use .010 if I were to do it again!!) Then cut down the idlers as per the article and attached the plastic rings. The reason I did this rather than use the ones in the Eduard set is that there was nothing else I was using from that set (the new one is much better in coverage and detail than the old one, other than the rings), and I didn't want to "trash" the set just for them.
I've got one of Tamiya's Marder II's and I may use them on that kit. We'll see.
Have fun with it.

Thanks for the info guys. Bill your Pz II looks great, I'll post a copy of mine when I finish.
I can't really find any more references - I've already spent over $100 AD on the kit, accessories and references, so I think I will just bash a few parts from my spares box in and see how we go. It won't be all that visible from the exterior anyway.
The Eduard set I am using (35350) I highly recommend, although the fenders being PE are a lot thinner than the kit and a little fiddley to work with, but look a lot more realistic.

I built one from the same article. Was my first after getting back into modeling. I was in the same quandry, and I bought the Tanks Workshop engine. It is pretty basic and comes with no air cleaners or instructions. I never did find much on the engine, etc, while I was building it, so I painted the rear inside of the hull flat black and let it go at that. I sitll have the resin engine sitting around incase I ever decide to do another. After I finished it, I found some interior pictures on the AFV Interiors site, which, as far as I know, is not active anymore. Someone on here copied a lot of the sites info to their pc. You could open a topic about it and see if anyone responds.
My IIG is pictured below in my sig. I recently got 2nd place in the armor division of my regional with it.
I hope you have as much fun doing yours as I did. Good luck with it.

I read the Dec01 ed of FSM and became inspired. I am modelling Tamiya's old PzII with some Eduard PE and scratchbuilding other parts. Trouble is now I have added the new intakes on the engine deck I can' t for the life of me find anywhere any reference photos or drawings of the powerplant or cooling system. Anyone know where I can?
