Chris, in one of the links to topics I sent you is a tank built in winter camo that probably used the tape technique you described earlier... if ya want to see what it might look like.

this is it:

you could paint the whole sherman white then brush green on leaving streaks of white

You showed me that right after I finished my Sherman and I really wished I would have tried it that way.

Thanks, Jason. Actually it looked a lot different from all the other white-washed Sherman models I have seen so far but I was trying to simulate the kind of application that was probably done in haste with broomstick, mops, rags, branches or whatever. And in the end result is really a crappy, uneven paint look.

Dwight,
That looks really good. well actually bad but that's what we all strive for. Looks like they drove through a sewer. hehe...very nice kit. The photo is also top notch. very professional.
The one I saw had larger area's of white with green outlining the major seems and body panels. I kinda like that but now yours looks good too. LOL.
this is why I have such a hard time finishing a kit. indecisive....
thanks for the reply,

Chris... I looked this up for someone not too long ago and found pics and posted them here... let me dig around and see if I can find it and see what you think...

from all descriptions the whitewash paint was hastily put on with bushes and mops and such... so it wouldn't look real pretty... it also faded rather fast with the weather.

Here's one topic on it:

ahh and here it is, the one I looked at:

hope that helps!

---edit---

Dwight was posting the same time as me I guess, but what he said/did is what I would do probably... if you want a fresh coat of winter camo you could thicken the paint in the wash a little...

Actually what I did with mine is spray olive drab on the entire tank as base coat and apply a thin white wash randomly as if the paint was applied hastily by a mop or something. Then I applied some weathering wash to simulate some dirt and rust.

In the end it looked like this:

suggestions on M4A3 Sherman winter camo.

hi all,
can someone suggest how to get the winter camo on to this tamiya kit.
It appears to be a white wash over the olive green. By looking at the painting instructions it seems I could paint it whiteish first and then brush something over it to keep a coat of green from sticking to the areas I want white. then use strong tape or something to remove the green. This is just a guess but may give a realistic look??? Has anyone done anything like this? what could I use to keep the green from sticking to the undercoat that wouldn't mess up the white basecoat?
I generally use MM enamel paints.
Also any pictures of this camo would be great.
I don't know that much about armor history. Would this qualify for the "Battle of the Buldge" group build? It seems about that time period from the description on the instructions.
Thanks alot, sorry for the long post....
TIA,
chrisj Big Smile [:D]
