Dragon 1/35 Pzkw I ausf B--The Little Panzer that Could!
Posted by wbill76 on Saturday, November 20, 2004 10:58 AM
Got hold of Dragon's 1/35 Pzkw I-B a while back in my last online buying splurge and finally got around to building it. The kit claims to have around 300 parts, 216 of which are tiny indy track links (each link is <1/4" wide). The kit does have some inherent inaccuracies regarding the idler but it does correct one of the orignal flaws by offering options on the pistol port covers that include the bolted detail vs. the smooth ports of the A version so it's a fair trade I guess.

Great little kit to build, decal sheet has markings for 6 different vehicles from all the early campaigns. I went with a 1940 France vehicle because I wanted the challenge of the complex decals to see if I could pull it off. :D

Built straight OOB, the kit included PE for the exhaust covers and clear lenses for the headlights. The rest of the PE fret had chains for optional smoke candles and a bizarre arrangement for super-detailing the rear light bracket...sooo tiny as to not be worth the trouble and the vehicle I was recreating didn't have the candles, so easy enough choice.

As always, any comments or criticisms are welcome!

And just to give an idea of the relative size, here's a shot of it side by side with a 1/35 KT, the top of the turret doesn't even reach up to the hull deck!

Matt,

This was a 1/35 vehicle, but it might as well have been 1/72 for how small it was! The links required some delicate effort, they had 5 sprue points for each link...and 96 links to a side with 12 extras per side just in case...I ended up destroying only 8 total in the process, so had some left over.

Joe,

As always my friend, your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the comments! Big Smile [:D]

Great build, wbill. I became frustratd with the little pieces and shelved mine for a little, but seeing how nice yours is makes me want to get it back out and finish

That looks so cute Bill. I admire the patience with those little tracks. Nice job on the weathering. Thanks for sharing. How do you keep spitting out builds so quickly.

Great Job!!

I have that same kit next in line for my next project.

My question to you or anybody for that matter is how do you get the turret decals to go over top of the vision ports on the side??

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the comments! For those who have the kit, I strongly encourage the build, it goes together very smoothly and a little patience with the links and voila! a little panzer to grace your shelf!

Jeff,

Getting the decals to lay down properly over the hatches requires both a simple and a complex solution. The simple part is to use a decal solvent, in this case I used MM Decal Solvent Solution. The complex part is to use a soft brush ( I used a 000 pointed brush) and gently force the decal into the crevices. It's complex because if you use too much force, the decal will tear and/or disintegrate. Little prodding, wait a couple of minutes, a little more solvent, a little more prodding, etc. Each of the turret decals took about 15-20 minutes of doing this to get it to lay down properly. I can't claim credit for this method, I read about someone doing the same thing to make decals lay down on a zimmerit coating and figured it would work on this just as well. Big Smile [:D]

That's a great looking build. It looks so tiny compared to the kt!

Looks good. I have been contemplating the DML Panzer I kits. I picked up the Tristar kit (Ausf A) to complement my Italeri Panzer I B. I'm a big fan of the smaller panzers and light tanks.

Very nice build of a very important vehicle. The weathering and overall finish is superb. I really like the subtle dusting on the lower hull and tracks.
Thanks for sharing! Smile [:)]

Rob,

I've heard that Dragon has also issued a Pz I Aus. B with North Africa markings. They also have the command version available but I don't know if it suffers from the same inaccuracies regarding the idler wheels or not. The kit I built came with a little corrections sheet for the upper hull that included smooth and bolted pistol ports, so at least they are making an effort and correcting the errors. Wink [;)]

Looks great, Bill. I've got this one and the command version. Neither stared yet, and kind of back in the queue for right now. Really like the pain and decalling. Very nice job.
