Dragon 1/35 Hornisse - Progress Pics
Posted by Dwight Ta-ala on Friday, November 26, 2004 6:02 PM
Here are some progress pics of Dragon Hornisse that I am currently working on. I am in the process of weathering the upper hull as well as adding the rest of the accessories and details.

Note: The decals on this kit are horribly thick and stiff. I have to hand paint the numbers and trim the cross and the mark on the front fender. I think lots of work will be required to make them unnoticeable later.

More progress pics to come. Smile [:)]

Great build. I just picked up the Nashorn. How is the kit?

Thankd guys.

Jason here are my thoughts:

1.) Fit is OK except for the indy tracks which need to be sanded a little to fit each other properly.
2.) Injection marks inside the hull plates and on the indies. You need to sand them off.
3.) Instructions are confusing. Study the parts carefully before putting them on.
4.) Decals are horribly thick. You may need excessive softener. If you can find a replacement do so.
5.) Overall details - very good as for me. If you want you can also drill out holes on the guide horn of each indy tracks for accuracy. (I didn't-he-he-he).

All good things to know. I was particularly inpressed with the wear and tear you simulated around the gun breech and the exaust pipes. They look really realistic. As for the guid horns, thanks for the tip. Not sure if I have the time/ patience for drilling out each one, but we'll see

Very nice, as always, Dwight! Guide horns, Smide horns...you did the right thing!

I've got the Nashorn and Initial Hummel. Basic parts are the same, I believe. Thanks for showing us the build. I really appreciate seeing your fantastic work.

Nice finish Dwight! Didn't catch the in-progress shots before. Your completed shots don't include one of the rear, did you paint the aiming stakes the candy-striped red-white? They were unfinished in the first round of pics. Excellent job overall on this one for sure. Thumbs Up [tup]

Excellent, as always, Dwight!

Yeah, don't worry about the guide horns on the tracks, particularly since some tracks on the Pzr IV chassis family of vehicles had solid horns anyway. It's entirely possible for a Hornisse to have tracks just as you've modelled!

UPDATE:
A quick look at some ref pix did indeed reveal just that. Plenty of Hornisse pix with solid guide horned tracks!

Dwight. what a beautiful looking Hornise. As already stated your work is just so darn impressive. No doubt you will find a theme for this in one of your great dioramas. I just recently purchased the DML Initial Hummel, I've wanted to build one for quite some time. I just hope it can come out half as nice as the job you've done on your Hornisse.
As usual thanks for making the time to share with us and the pointers on building this kit. Semper Fi, mike

Slightly off-topic:

Mike, You'll like the DML Hummel...it's a fun build with a lot of opportunity for detailing inside the fighting compartment. The only issue you will run into with it is the fit of the side "box" panels for the fighting compartment superstructure. Be careful with their fit as it's very easy to assemble them in a way that creates eiether a gap at the front edge or in the middle where the gun shield goes. I think this is due to the simple fact that they used the same panels as in the Hornisse and adapted it slightly to take the 15cm howitzer mount for the Hummel. Wink [;)]

Hey Guys, I am very happy to hear your remarks. Sorry for the late answer but I freed my self for the weekend to take the kids out.

As for the kit, I have started the work on the base and am looking for the appropriate figures.

I will post some pics when ready. By the way here are more pics.

Once again, beautiful work. Is this the initial Dragon release, or the latter?

Whats up tell us your secret. You build models like as if you are doing it for war effort.

Very nice job. To me you are about a god!
