Tiger I Zimmerit application

Hey edog, I've got this kit along with the zimmerit upgrade kit. It's entire replacement parts for the unzimmerited basic kit parts, so I'm not sure how useful it would be to someone doing the Tamiya Tiger -- particularly because they are slightly different scales.

Maybe I misunderstood your post though -- sorry if I did.

If you meant that he should consider buying it, well, it is a nice kit, but the build-up is a total pain, with each track link attached to a huge resin plug. It's beautiful when built up, and the Wittmann actually looks a bit like him, but it is 100% static display.

Thank you all Gents. That's all very impressive. First off however, I plan to build Tamiya's 1:35 Tiger Tank (Otto Carius's version) So I can get a grasp of the subtletes for the Mid and Late version Tiger. I have already built Tamiya's Early Production model that is R/C and that left me wanting more. As for pictures, I will do my best when I have something worthy. I have an interest in Tigers partly because my grandfather narrowly escaped them (and a German 88 anti-aircraft gun they were using against his jeep) in WWII. Thanks again.

Now to the Zim, Here are some techniques and some tools used. Of course, you will have to make adjustments for the 1/16 scale (again, you lucky dog)

You are also correct, the Tamiya Zimmerit tool would be to small in scale.

I have 3 suggestions with the zimmerit on that 1/16th Tiger Okie Boy:

1) If you do not convert to Mid or Late Production..do not use Zimmerit.

2) If you do convert to Mid or Late Pro...use a Razor saw for the zimmerit. To get the best scale for 1/16th, you should remove every other tooth on the razor saw with a motor tool. Trust me...a razor saw usually has the same seperation between teeth as a #5 Tamiya Zim Tool. Also use either Tamiya's Ployester Putty, Zim-it-rite, or other soft putties when using razor saw.

3) Use the Scewdriver Technique, but use an Epoxy Putty.

If you want to go all out with that Tiger 1, I say go for the conversion and zimmerit. Make that Monster stand out.

Check out this link for zimmerit application okieboy. Moses gave some good tips here. I think the tamiya applicator tools would be too small so a saw blade would probably work fine.

Well, Okieboy…

You have really got your work cut out for you. Right off the top of my head, I can tell you that besides the cupola, the tracks will have to be replaced, the drive sprockets will have to be changed, the rear deck will have to be retooled in parts, the fan outlet on the turret will have to be moved/changed, the location of the headlights will have to be moved, and several other modifications will have to be made depending on what time period the Tiger was produced. This is a project for a person with a lot of time, and patients!!

You are going to have to invest in some books. I own "Achtung Panzer No.6", and highly recommend this book. I have heard that "Germany's Tiger Tanks D.W. to Tiger I" by Thomas Jentz & Hilary Doyle is the essential Tiger I book, but have not been able to get my hands on it. I think it is out of print. I can also recommend Tank Power No. 13, 14, and 15. They are produced by AJ Press. There are a lot of CAD drawings of specific tanks in these books (not all of them correct). The zim will be a very easy job considering what else you will have to do. I imagine a saw blade would make a perfect applicator, and you can use most modeling putties for the actual zim.
