Welcome to the family!
I've done a couple desert tanks, the last one being a Gulf War M-60. I used Celluclay as the base material. When I mixed it, I used Liquitex acrylics (just a few drops). I think I used a light tan. All their earth tones are great, but they are a high solids paint, so it doesn't take much. You can also use some of the model railroad ground cover colors to simulate a desert environment. If you are interested, do a search in the forum for celluclay. There's some more info there.
