Looking very nice, you do excellent work!!! I am interested in this build. I want make an early Sho't from the Tamiya 1/25 Centurion MKIII. Mouse Armour offers a lot of parts for the 1/25 Centurion, and 1/35 as well. I am looking forward to seeing more of your progress.

It seems like ther're not so much IDF fans here Big Smile Just took more pics:

Some plastic card packaging was added to the turret's front to match AFV Club's turret shape, Tamiya's turret is too short to the front.

And now the mantlet:

I sanded the .30 cal MG housing a little at both sides to match the pics I have, and added the letters "H + S", made out of plasticard. I added the brackets for the canvas cover, only the bolt heads are missing. I still have to add the brackets to the turret... Double the fun... Once it is done, I'll make the canvas cover using epoxy putty. Before I decided to make a IDF Sho't-Cal, I just bought Tamiya's Centurion just because I like the tank... Then I asked around to know the kit's unaccuracies (I almost fainted). AFV Club's offering was new at that time. I started making the hull modifications (more on this later) and all was going well, but some time later, AFV Club's IDF Sho't-Cal came out, and a friend bought it and gave it to me for adding some detail (cables to the headlights, new texture to the turret and missing weld lines) I compared it to my kit and all the rumours were true, but nothing that good scratchbuilding skills couldn't fix ;D. I remember somebody told the only "unfixable unaccuracy" was the turret roof, which was suposed to be 2mm narrow. When I compared it to the AFV Club's turred it proved to be false... or true? Actually, the turret roof has a trapezoidal shape, Tamiya's roof front width matches AFV Club's, but at the rear Tamiya's roof is narrower than AF Club's by almost 2mm... And it is 2 mm shorter as well... So, why not to add the missing width and length? That's what I did, and now matches AFV Club's roof dimensions:

Well... I'm afraid that this is going nowhere... For a real Sho't-Kal Dalet I have to cut part of the turret shell, just where the commander's sight is and glue a new piece, with a totally different sight, but that new part is welded. I already asked for more info at an IDF Forum... It's been more than a week and my post was ignored, so no reference Sad I don't have much time for modelling neither I have time for checking that forum everyday, so let's see what happens... I made some more progress with comparison pics, I'll post them later. Best regards.

After 3 years gathering dust in a shelf, I'll revive this project... Now is easier to find pics and info than 3 years ago (pics from museum vehicles and low-res wartime pictures though)... Good for me. My goal is to reach this:

As I said in my first post, it is Shot-Cal Dalet, the latest upgrade done to IDF Centurions before they were transformed into APCs. It features a gun with thermal jacket and new sight cover for the TC... Oh yes, and Blazer ERA. Well, I decided to add more detail to the turret, so this is what I did:

According to my info, both Centurion Mk. 3 and Mk.5 versions were used by the IDF, both versions modified to the same standart. There are several differences between the turrets of both variants, first of all (and most important), the roof layout... A pic will explain it all clearly:

To the right: An Mk.3 roof, to the left: An Mk.5 roof. The gunner's periscope is on the roof in the Mk.3, it was moved forward, to the turret shell, in the Mk.5. Another difference is the rear hatch, necessary for unmounting the 20 pdr. gun on the Mk.3, deleted on the Mk5:

Top: Mk.3 rear, Below: Mk.5 rear. AFAIK, there were Sho't-Cal Dalet with both type of turrets, the most significant difference between them are the ERA tiles used on them, 8 for an Mk.3 turret and 7 for a Mk.5 turret, more on this later. As we all know, Tamiya's Centurion depicts an Mk.3 version. Now I'll begin the modifications :)

Oh my goodness! What a terrible kit! Is what I thought when I compared the Tamiya kit with a AFV Club offering, given to me for adding some weld lines (more of this tragedy later)... Tamiya's turret is undersized! It needs to be stretched 2 mm to the rear, and more detail to be added to the turret base. It needs a major reshape, both halves have a very bad fit. I decided to use the AFV Club's turret as a basis for the correct dimensions. This is what I've done:

To the left: AFV Club's turret, to the right: Tamiya's turret. I added some plastic strips to the base, then applied putty. I added the missing 2 mm to the rear using plasticard, then beefed it up with epoxy putty and sanded to shape. New texture was made using Tamiya putty + Testors liquid cement. I had to erase the little hatch at the turret's left side... I'll deal with it later. the roof was modified as well, I added the missing 2 mm, and carefully removed the commanders cupola, so I could rotate it to make the hatch hinge to be backwards, not to the right side. A pic of the original turret, taken from Eduard's site:

This is my modified turret:

I made some modifications to the turret mantlet. I'll post the pics later, with more pics of my modified turret. I started working on a new commander's hatch, more on this in another update. Something happened to the hull I was modifying... I'll explain it all in the next update... Stay tuned. Thanks for looking. Best regards.

Looks great!  If it wasn't for the thermal sleeve on the barrel, and the humps on the exhaust deck, that would be a good start on a SADF Olifant!  Looking forward to the rest of this build.

For IDF fans, my latest project: Centurion Sho't-Kal Dalet - Part 1

Well, here's my latest project progress, my Centurion Sho't-Kal Dalet, using a Tamiya Centurion as base kit... I know, I know... The AFV Club requires only a little work, but the Tamiya kit was available in my LHS and is less expensive than the AFV Club one and I like to detail not-so-detailed kits. Here're the pics:

It started like this:

And then:

Cutting away the moulded engine deck was a pain in the @##... As you can see, I'm adding the thermal sleeve to the M68 barrel, and I remade the back plate, but I shortened the hull about 2 mm, because, as you know, the original Tamiya release was a motorized kit, because of that, the hull was way too long, I'll cut the lower hull after the fender issue. Here're the finished grills:

I'll make the handles and hinges after removing the fenders and stowage boxes, first I'll glue the engine deck in place, then here's the fender issue: I'll remove the fenders and boxes and replace them with home made items. Here you have an exhaust close-up:

I'll do another update in a few months. Thanks for looking. Most regards.
