E100 Ausf B WIP update 07/27/2008

panzerguy  I can just see it.  Stalin looks at the requests coming in.  Underwear, who gave them underwear.  Heck I don't even want to feed them or give them enough ammo.  What has caused this!!!   I will send them to Siberia!!!  Why are they running.

Thanks for all the complements.  It's been a fun build.  Added a couple of things and learned alot about painting and fixing mistakes.  Always room to improve and with everyones help and constructive critism, I am improving dramaticaly.

Now that is a scary looking beast. The battle of Berlin might have gone differently if the Panzertruppe had a few of those in service!

Here she is, the finished version.  Had to repaint and apply new decals.  Thank you doog for the help.  Didn't quite get the decals to weather the same.  But still looks alot better than the uneven numbers. Weathered up the tracks and exhaust to finish it up.

Tacobuff  I got the camo pattern by first drawing the circles onto a scrap piece of 0.010 plastic card.  I then scored out the opening.  I made out about 6 different sizes and orientation on one card.  Also I rotated and tried to only use a couple at a time with my airbrush.  I applied masking tape to the outer edge of the mask to prevent over spray.  Also the mask was held as tight as possible to the vehicle.

say, how did you paint on those little circles on the camo?  it really adds a nice variety to a two tone camo.

NO problem about the paint--just keep it in mind for the next build!

I will not be repainting it.  No offence to your sugestion on the mixing but I like to keep stuff like that as a progression on my skills.   And with everyones help, I am improving my skills greatly.  Thank you everyone.

As for the gun and shape this kit by trumpeter is based on a future ausf B version.  The individual that first modeled it, then trumpeter based it kit on.  The barrel I used was the same as the Jagdtiger.  It has been a fun kit and not too many flaws.  The biggest one was that there are no vision blocks for the commanders coupla.

Yes it does and thanks for pointing that out. I do like the shape of Moose's build more, that long high velocity gun looks mean.

The E-100 wasn't even truly a paper panzer in the way we think of them since full design drawings weren't done to finalize the turret, armament, etc. As a result, the competing designs from DML and Trumpeter are truly "what if" concepts. The Trumpeter E-100 concept was actually taken from a "what if" build done by Mike Rinaldi several years ago while the DML concept borrows heavily from the Maus, hence its dual gun arrangement, turrent shape/design, etc. Both are plausible but were never "real" if that makes sense.

I am a bit stumped though. My Dragon 1:72 E-100 has a shorter barrel with a coax smaller calibre cannon. Can anyone shed a light on this? As Moose's murderous looking build has a much longer barrel without a perforated muzzle brake.

Well, it looks cool so far but to be completely honest with you, this is gonna hurt. I would REMOVE THOSE CROOKED DECALS PROMPTLY!!!

They REALLY, seriously detract from the build!!!

Seriously, Moose--I don't want you to get p*ssed, but I know you don't want to leave them on as they are. I have several sheets of extra turret numbers if you need replacements that I would be more than willing to send if you don't have replacements--those numbers just really take the "awesomeness" from this kit and make it look completely amateurish. Don't let them ruin this build.

Just scrub them off with some decal setting solution--they'll come right off.

Send me a PM with your address if you want some replacements. 

Here is the next update of my E100.  I sprayed the vehicle down with a light coat of dessert yellow.   I used a very thin mix.  This resulted in the colors blending and giving a faded look.  Further light was accumplished by giving it a wash of light yellow.  I also put on the decals for the turret number.

Here is the light yellow wash.

Next up, I used a burnt sierra wash on the panel lines and around the wheels. I then used the pin wash technique on it.

The next update will be showing the MIG pigments.  I had to redo this step to lessen the effect.  I made it too dirty.  Good thing I can change this, just wash it with mineral spirits a little more.  This will be with the next update with pictures.

Yes, I see that the right side numbers are not level.  Looks alot worse on the pictures.  Man do the pictures show my mistakes.

Thanks Panther F and doog.  The colors are arclyics,  Gunze Sanygo to be exact.  Yep the middle stone is a bit shinny, have yet to give the dusting and then dull coat.  Turns out some of the colors that I use like the middle stone and red brown are either semi or gloss.  Ohh well, the colors match nice so I will deal with the dull coat.  But Love the new route gives me more time for the wife and builds.

What an awesome build!!  

New run at work has allowed me to get some paint on her.  Still have to finish the paint and give her a dusting of sandy yellow to blend and age the paint.  And of course the weathering.

Here is the next update of my E-100 Ausf B.  As you can see by the first picture the commanders coupa has no vision blocks.  I fabricated up a set by first cutting a disk of plastic card to fit in the bottom of the coupla.  I then measured the width of the openings and cut 0.40 plastic card to fit. The opening for the vision blocks were marked onto the plastic disk. I then glued the vision block pieces to the disk.

Splinter shields were fabricated using 0.010 plastic card and plastic rod.  PE nuts were added to the top of the splinter shields.  Also I made up a cleaning rod tube using scrap PE and plastic rod.  I thought a cleaning tube like that found on a Panther would be a match for this monster.  The accessed end I made to be used from on top of the engine deck.  I also did this for all the tool clamps as well.  Figured that the vehicle would be too tall to work the clamps and such.  Final filling and priming are almost done.  Then the painting shall commence.

The last picture shows the vision blocks installed in the coupla.  Much, Much better looks.
