71' chevelle or el camino?
Posted by glaser2 on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 4:23 PM

i'm trying to build a 71' elcamino, i know there aren't any kits out there related to the subject and i planned on makin my own by swapping out the front end of a 78' el camino with a chevelle of/or around that year since i know that the front ends were the same. only problem is i cant find any 71' or 72' chevelle kit. i've seen one way back when, but i cant remember where. does anyone know where to find it? i think its an amt/ertl kit, had an off green color with black racing stripes? if any one has one i'm willing to buy it off them

AMT re-released a '72 Chevelle. Box art is red with black stripes. Try modelroundup.com. If you can't find it PM me, I think I have one somewhere.

What you need is model filler putty or contour putty.  The brand I prefer is Squadron, Green for armor models, or White for aircraft and probably cars (white is a finer grain for smaller scales).  Testors and Tamiya also have their versions.  I doubt Wal-Mart will have it, but a craft store like Hobby Lobby or just about any Hobby Shop will have it.

Good luck.

I would go with the resin transkit from JFP as mentioned above.  The 78 Elky and the 72 Elky were different in the body, not just in the front clip.  Later Elky's were based on the Malibu specifically.  I can't remember exactly when the Malibu became seperate from the Chevelle line.  The big thing is they are WAY different in body style 70-72, and then the 78.  I have worked on both that friends owned.  I worked on those for a long time.  first my buddy's 70 for about a year and a half, he sold it to another friend and I worked on it for the next 3 years.  The 78 I worked on entirely different body, much broader and beefier looking, worked on that turning it into a light to light street burner for a friend who was crippled(crazy guy lemme tell ya).
