WOW, Matt!

That is pristine! I can't believe the red parts are ALL decal?! WOW! Tha's some impressive decaling skills!

What kind of white did you use? Lacquer, acrylic, enamels?

Thanks very much, Doog!

The white paint is Tamiya's Pure White lacquer, from the spray can. I decanted some and applied the first coat with my airbrush, since there are lots of little ducts and openings in the body I wanted to make sure to hit. The final coat went on from the can.

The decals are Cartograf, and I can't say enough about how nice they are to work with. They're beautifully printed, opaque, and the whites are always white-white, not off-white.

I give the credit to Cartograf because I hate, hate, hate to decal. It's by far my least favorite part of the hobby. But even as much as I dislike them, and how bad I am at applying them, I managed to put all these on in just a couple of sittings.

Thankfully Tamiya's re-releasing some of their cool older race car kits with Cartograf decals. This one's recent, and we just had a shipment come in with the Mercedes C9 and the Martini-sponsored Porsche 935 Turbo. It's going to be a good winter for building!

Sorry MattBlush [:I]

Now I see where it says Tamiya DUH!

I just got the Revell curbside is why I asked. Jagermeister sponsored and I like the color orange of it. I used to have alot of the Tamiya Porsche 956's but many moves made them dissappear, usually piece by piece.

Thanks, Mike. I'm really glad to see this one back, too, although I have to admit I have a few copies in my stash...

This is the Tamiya kit, and it originally appeared when I was at college. I rode my Schwinn to buy it at the now-defunct (and extra-dumpy) Hills department store. For some reason Hills had an above-average toy section, and I built the kit on my desk in my dorm room. My roommate never complained, at least not after the tube-glue fumes kicked in. The place was slightly larger than a phone booth, but with only one window, and well, no phone.

I was studying to be a photojournalist. Just like there are Chevy/Ford rivalries and Ginger/Mary Ann ones, I was a die-hard Canon man, across the fence from the Nikon guys. My first professional piece of photo gear was a very used Canon F-1, which I used for years and years, for everything from newspaper reporting (including a few Indy 500s) to my first projects for FSM.

The camera's retired to a place of honor on my model shelf, and the 956 is going right next to it.

Matt

P.S.: I still have that first, partially finished kit in my stash, and at some point I may get around to finishing it!

Is that the Revell Curb side or Tamiya full interior Matt?

Thanks, Bob!

The decals were great. Everything fit well, and lots of little pieces make up the large red sections.

Very nice build Matt.  How difficult was it to get the decaling over the cockpit?

Here's one I finished over the weekend, Tamiya's Porsche 956:

I painted the body white, but everything else is decal. They're Cartograf, so that certainly helped!

Hope you like it!
