Rare "Squarebird"
Posted by buildit on Thursday, January 29, 2009 8:01 PM

This one took over a year (working on-and-off) to get this far.  To the best of my knowledge, the Wood Brothers team only ran this car with this sponsorship at a few short track races in 1983, with Buddy Baker driving.  No kit was made of this particular car (I used a leftover "squarebird" kit I had) so decals had to be hunted and scavenged from other kit sheets.  No decals for the stripes so I masked them off, mixed the paint for color, and shot 'em with the airbrush.

My apologies if the pic quality isn't quite right.  I'm still experimenting and learning with this digital camera.  Thanks for looking!

Great looking model and great to see someone do a Wood Brothers  car.

Oustanding job on the model and the stripes, especially! WOW!

Buddy Baker used to be among my avorite drivers back when I used to follow NASCAR!I used to have n "RC Cola" jacket in red, white, and blue--they were his sponsors even back before this car.

Outstanding build, guy! I really love the "old" style stockers. Fit and finish are really right up there.

Got any more?

Nice build. I really liked the story behind it as well. Nice to see that level of dedication. I always felt if there was any genre of model that could stem the tide of DieCast it would be NASCAR models. Giving the fan an interesting new perspective to enjoy their chosen sport. The oppurtunity to be their favorite driver's "car builder", as it were.

More?  These were actually taken a few years ago, and the Hodgdon car recently suffered a bit of a "crash".  Had to "take it back to the shop" for some repair work and new paint and decals.  It's shelf space is currently occupied by the Valvoline car.  Some of the cars in the wall pics are diecasts, and a few more have been added since these were taken.  Think I might be a fan of the 21 car?

Slated for some future time is a repaint of the '69 Cyclone Spoiler shown on the shelf above the framed photo.  I'm also currently working on a '71 Cyclone (the Purolator car).  It'll be quite a while before it's done, though.

Now that is a collection after my own heart. I knew Neil and I've had one of the "2nd Generation" square birds put back to build that very car for a long time. It is one of my favorite Wood Bros. cars. But how about one of the "1st Generation" square birds and one of the cars that gave Holman Moody a start on their road to Total Performance in Nascar? Built just like the real one with some leftover "damaged" T-bird parts (Monogram) and a few sticks of tubing.

Nice 'Bird Mitchum!  I've seen alot of your work here and on another site and I'm always impressed.  Maybe someday I'll have some nice backgrounds like yours!  LOL

Thanks.  Hey, it only takes a sheet of styrofoam, some bits and pieces found around the house, some Elmer' glue and three or four days. LOL

Seriously, it is a lot easier and cheaper than it looks and I'll be glad to help anyone anyway I can.

The main ingredients in this backdrop is a styrofoam sheet with HO railroad ballast glued to it, some metal rod, popsicle sticks and the metal mesh taken from a real car's air filter.

Remember when, back before photo etching and aftermarket, imagination was the most important "extra" you added to your kit builds?
