1/8 Pocher Volvo Diesel Engine
Posted by charlie98210 on Saturday, April 11, 2009 2:14 PM

Just finished detailing the first Pocher model I've ever built. I got it on ebay and it looked complete, but after I started working on it, I found that it was missing the fan belts, metal screws, and the thin hoses. I adapted, purchasing some shrink-tubing, and two large "o" rings. I used the shrink-tubing, over several paper clips to make the various small hoses, bending the metal clips into the shapes I wanted and then using a handheld hair dryer to shrink the tubing so that it was tight around the metal of the paper clip. The "o" rings became the fan belts.

I didn't like the color scheme used by Pocher (really dark green plastic for most of the kit) so I lightened everything up, using flat sand for the engine block and transmission, red for the valve colvers, brass for the large hose fittings and matt bronze for the turbocharger rail and clamps on the oil filter cans and motor mounts. Finished up with a coat of Metal Masters Dullcote.

I'm waiting for the plexiglass to arrive (to build a base for it). Here's a photo of the engine so far (click to enlarge):

Nice build Charlie.  Looks like you did a pin wash to bring out a lot of the detail.  Nice touch.

Correct. Used Burnt Umber first, then Raw Umber in all the places that I thought diesel oil might seep through.

Update: Finished! 1/8 Pocher Volvo Diesel Engine

Kit is complete. The stand is a 3/8 thick piece of green marble with a grooved border made from a brass carpet border kit I purchased at the local hardware store (and cut to fit). The kit was simple to do...it was mostly painting and pin wash which took the most time.

The small tubing was missing from the Pocher kit, to I used bent paper clips inside heat-shrink tubing and used my wife's hair dryer to shrink the tubing until it conformed to the paper clip's shape.

And I made a small plague which I glued onto the base.

Beautiful job. It looks like you should try and start it (lol). I've always wanted to build a pocher kit.
