Heres mine. Kinda jacked up the wheels a little bit cause I decided on white wheels after I already painted them black. Got some more touch up to do

Thanks, Jim, Bill, and John!

This was a really fun build, all the trouble notwithstanding! It was cool because you didn;t have to really follow any proscribed color choices, and could do pretty much as you pleased. I recommend trying one of these modifieds! They look great sitting on the shelf!

Karl, what a fabulous build!

Knowing the pain and suffering you put into this only enhances the final job. I can almost smell the burnt oil and rubber!

So long folks!

Well, H A L L E L U J A H ! ! !    It's FINALLY DONE!!!

After no less the NINE strips and re-paints, one ruined body, and months of diligence and stubborn resolve to finish this monster, I made the switch to 100% good ol' Tamiya acrylic, and shined 'er up with some Maguire's Scratch X. The colors are Tamiya Metallic Green (spray can) and Light Green out of the bottle, with Black spray can. The Tamiya gold is from a bottle.

Since I had ruined one body, I got a replacement kit, but this new kit is surprisingly slightly different in at least one area--the outside body rails. I had a devil of a time getting the original ones to fit around the pipes, and mangled one f them pretty bad. I wound up grabbing the one from the spare kit, but to my surprise, it had a different configuration--slightly longer, and the placement of the transverse pegs is different. I wound up modifying the attachment pegs, cutting the middle one off and locating it about 5 mm forward.

Here's the photos...it was weathered with MIG pigments, of course, and the splatter was done by the method of directing the air stream of my air brush through a paint brush loaded with paint. The decals are aftermarket, and the "17"'s were painted around the outside with matching gold paint as on the body.

Hope you like it, and I"m thrilled beyond words to finally have finished this, my most drawn-out and difficult build! Man, there's nothing like the feeling of NOT LETTING A KIT "BEAT YOU"!!!! Toast Now, if they would only re-open Mok-A-Tek speedway! Stick out tongue

Hi guys!

Well, I've had an education working with Krylon paint--it took me three strips and re-paintings to get this finish of Krylon Raspberry with Tamiya Gold and Black. I kept getting crinkling on the Krylon coat. I believe that what I was doing was heating up the Krylon too hot in a pot of hot tap water, and when it would hit the cold model body, it would crinkle? I tried thelast coats with just slightly warm paint, and it seemed to work fine.  I'm going to gloss coat it soon, and then go in for the decals.

Thanks, Gil!

I'm just waiting to mask and polish out the body here. I am going for a two/three tone body, so it'll be a little bit for the update here...

The same thing happens to dirtbike riding areas evverywhere--people build andmove next to the tracks or areas, and then complain and shut them down. Makes you want to just brap across their front lawns for about an hour! lol...

Very cool build (as usual) and thanks for the pics and stories about the old dirt track. We had a place called "Speedway Park" many, many years ago that ran some awesome sprint car races. It was at the edge of town and the developers built subdivisions right next to the track. Then people bought the homes and complained about the noise Banged Head [banghead] Eventually it was shut down, that's "progress" I guess.

doog,

Another interesting build you have going!

More importantly is the history as to why and the story you share behind the build.

Its just another fact that when we where growing up things were less commercialized, simpler and more impressionable when it comes to family and indelible memories.

I will keep watching!

cool car! If anyone askes what the black boxes are, tell 'em its for your digital Auto Meter gauges. Tongue [:P] Nice work on the coil, too.

EDIT: I think its cool that its ford powered. Most Dirt track cars Ive seen are chevy powered.
Nothing like seeing "two palm trees humpin' a garbage can"!! That's what we called the heavy lift guys when I was on an EH-60 at Fort Carson back in '91.
I'll never look at garbage cans the same again.

Karl, I'm going to have to stop responding to your build threads as I am running out of adjectives! This looks absolutely amazing!

And you did a fine job of scratching that coil! Glad to have helped you out.

So long folks!

AMT '34 Early Ford Modified--FINALLY DONE!! WAHHOOO!!!
Posted by the doog on Monday, October 26, 2009 11:33 AM

Hey guys!

Thanks to everybody weighing in so far about my engine wiring question. Here's what I've got done so far; I figured I'd start a new thread about it, as it may help people who use the "Search" function?

This is the kit-the AMT '34 Early Ford Modified.

The kit is pretty simple--and could use a little TLC in the way of detailing. I added radiator hoses, a coil on the firewall, a mount for the alternator, a pre-wired distributor from Model Car Garage; the oil filter had to be moved because there's no way to put it at the front of the engine as it says in the directions; the mounting struts of the engine interfere with its placement. I added some masking tape seat belts over the molded-on ones on the seat. Here's a pic....I then added some PE buckles to make it look like a five-point harness.

And here is the progress so far.I went with a gold motif to complement the body paint, which is a SURPRISE still! Stick out tongue That's what I love about these cars--you can do almost anything you want with them; customize them, change the colors, go wild--they're like 4-wheeled brappers! Big Smile

I also added some PE dials and transfers for the dials in the tub. There's also a square of BMF on the mirror.

There's my version of a coil on the firewall--thanks, Bill! Don't know if it's technically "correct", but that's my coil and I'm stickin' to it! Big Smile

...and in 1,000X magnification, here's the engine and cab.You can see the PE buckles. I painted the fire extinguisher blue, as I saw it in a photo of a real car.

I also wanted to take you back to why I'm building this car--"Moc-A-Tek Speedway".

Don't ask me what it means--it's some Indian name or something--lots of that in Pennsylvania and NY. I read that one guy who raced there used to call it "Make-A-Wreck", lol! It was a 1/4 mile dirt track in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, in what was a campground/trailer park kinda place that ran races on Saturday nights. My dad used to take me there when we went on vacation to Lake Wallenpaupack (another Indian name!) and then I used to go there in later years if I wasn't playing in my local band.

It closed in '94; someone said that the ol' lady who owned the land thought she could make money by selling it for developement. Yeah, well...that obviously didn't happen. Others say it was silt/drainage issues. Well, anyway, I found this link which show its state today. Sitting quiet, with only the ghosts of old Rumblers kicking up memories.

Here's the sign..

..the old, rickety tower that you would sit in front of...

...

Not sure who this dude is--he has the photos on his site--but his Dad raced there. This is the far end of the "bleachers", and shows the whole of the place, really. You'd come in at the far end of the photo, and I'd we'd always come and sit right about here, in front of the first turn...

Like, Right here....

The wooden seats were hard, the dirt in the air would choke you, and the noise was ear-splitting! All grown over now, but you'd sit here and watch turn 3&4 here, where they'd come down to the flag tower, and the guy would keep 'em coming nice and neat around the last turn...wait....wait....and then the flag would wave and BRRRMMMMM!!!!

..and they'd bump and crash around the first turn, and every second race (or sometimes every third lap!) there's be a flip or spin in the first turn here.....

...and then they'd speed down the back stretch...

All gone now, all silent. Man, they were good times! [sigh] Even my mom woudl come some times!

Anyway, for anyone reading this thread and looking for some photo coverage for references and whatnot, here's a link to a forum where "Dirties" (?) hang out, and there's a gallery of photos...

http://www.dirttrackdigest.com/forum/index.php?

More photos and update when I get the body finished-probably about a week or so...comments and questions welcomed!

P.S. HI MOM AND DAD!!! lol! [#welcome]
