New to cars. Need help finding a good company.
Posted by Coldsteel6d on Thursday, November 12, 2009 7:49 PM

This is my first post in the auto forum here. I build mostly modern armor but have delved into cars in the somewhat distant past. My abilities have gotten much better in the last year so I am thinking I will get a few cars to go with my M-1's and Leo's.

I am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a quality model company. I am mainly intersted in US sports cars especially Camaros. Any year will do, 60's or 00's. they are all good with me.

What I want is detail and a really high quality company. I am not looking for those skill level 2 jobs you can get at Hobby Lobby if you know what i mean. If any of you build armor then it would be like me asking for a new Dragon kit instead of a rereleased Tamiya one. Nothing wrong with the Hobby Lobby ones, I just want more. I don't have the scratch building skill to sufficiently modify a lesse model to what I want...not yet anyway.

So if anyone could help me out that would be great. Oh and I am looking for the standard scal, 1-24 I think it is if I remember right.

Thanks a lot.

You may want to try the Revell Special editions, Revell of Germany or Tamiya.  For old Camaros, you might want to consider the base Revell kits and then add a bunch of aftermarket goodies like distributor wiring, flocking. Detail Master makes all kinds of detail for that scale.

I've always liked the 1/24th Monogram kits.

Hi Coldsteel6d-

IMHO Tamiya is by far and away the best for car models.  Most have moveable front-wheels, but most DON'T have engines and are called 'curb-side'.  There newer kits have decals for the insterment dials and seatbelts, and some have painting masks for the windows.  And as with most Tamiya products the kit details are crisp, the instructions are easy to follow, and the build itself is simple. And the tires are Always better than the ones in the Revell or AMT kits also.

Tamiya also makes a Great line of motorcycles you might like.  They are 1/16 scale so are larger than the cars, therefore more and better detail.
A while back I found a Ducati 916 and I was so impressed by this Kit that I decided to wait for my skills to improve before attempting it.

And best of all...  Tamiya themselves make aftermarket Photo-Etched brass sets for both there cars & cycles. Party [party]

Anyway, Good Luck and remember- Kepe your stick on the ice,

Coldsteel,

If you're looking for American Muscle, you need to look at the Revell/Monogram kits that have come out in the last 10-15 years.  If you're focusing on Camaro, with the exception of the six cyl,  Revell has done every major package for the 67-69.  While cheaper, the AMT/MPC kits are much older molds, not as detailed and can have major problems.  However, like Airfix, sometimes they're the only game in town.

Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.

Need help finding a good company.

We're all good company here!

sorry, couldn't resist. The muscle car plastic kits are a minefield of new tools and old re-pops. while most camaros are good, there is a bit of variety to detail and quality. i like revell's 1/24 kit.

For American muscle cars you really don't have much beyond AMT, Lindberg and Revell. None of these are going to come with all the extra goodies it sounds like you want but there is plenty of aftermarket out there.

You can start with detailmaster

A lot of the Japanese companies are curbside (no motor), but I think some of the Tamiya Ferrari's are full detail and come loaded with PE and other bits. Their Alpine Renault 1600 is a very nice kit. It is the only Tamiya car kit I've built and I was impressed with both the detail and fit.
