Two Lane Blacktop is a cult classic. Stars Dennis Wilson as "the Mechanic" and yes, he's the drummer from The Beach Boys, and James Taylor as "The Driver", and yes THAT James Taylor! Warren Oates played "G. T. O.", their nemesis on their race across the US from California to Washington DC. As you can see by the names, not a lot of thought went into building the characters.

However, it's a 55 Chevy, not a 56. It's also the same car that "Bob Falfa" (Harrison Ford) crashes while racing the 32 Deuce in American Graffiti.

I just watched Two Lane Blacktop just a few months ago, which is how I know anything at all about it. I remember seeing it over 30 years ago but my recollection of those days is a bit hazy! It's a really good movie about drag racing on the street. No, let me change that to "it has some really good footage about drag racing in the street". I can't honestly say it's a "good movie".

The sound of the 454 crate engine was so good that they dubbed the sound of that engine over the Trans Am's 455 in Smokey and the Bandit, so you could say that the 55 was in three different movies!

 

Ah...'Two Lane Blacktop'-I remember seeing it in 1974...or was it '75 at the student union @ WVU-free movie.  Great cars/racing & one of the best movies lines ever spoken by a singer pretending to be an actor..."Make it two hundred dollars m*f*er and you've got your self an automobile race"....ah...thanks for the memories Bill

Bill, thanks for the info. Sounds like a cool flock! My girlfriend's u8nlce is restoring a '55 now in black; the car in that link and movie reminded me of it. It has no trim, exactly like that car--but I think that he's going to do it up in Bel air chrome.

By any chance, can I talk you into doing something simaler with other subjects, like aircraft, military transport trucks (not tanks, I mean stuff like the M-35 Duce-and-a-half trucks), helicopters, ships, and so on? I can see you working your magic on a generic distroyer model, placing it at the bottom of the sea in a diorama.

As far as other genres, I don't see that happening yet. The problem is T-I-M-E! I still build primarily for fun and enjoyment, and with my travel / work schedule this year, my modeling time is at a premium right now. If I'm not loving what I'm building, I'm not building it. Ships never interested me much, and airplanes are so big that I have a hard time finding a place to put them once they're finished! Never been much into softskins--hey, I DO have a collection of helicopters that I'd built from my earliest days as a modeler! Helo's are what I started building first, back in oh.....'85 or so? They're at home in Pennsylvania at mom & dad's house right now though!

When I hear you talk of a ship at the bottom of the sea dio, I always think of that :"Titanic" dio that some guy did--did you ever see it? It was positively phenomenal---I could never hope to top that!

Thanks, Bill! You made me laugh--there's no "rust" per se, but geez, that color "Sierra Gold" is kind of a "pretty" "rust", don'tcha think?! Must have been a Freudian choice or something, lol! Thanks for the compliment!

Thanks too, Wayne! Yeah, the humidity really can throw an orange into the works, if you know what I mean. I got some peel, but managed to rub most of it out. Tedious, but worth it. It shows somewhat in the foiling though. Again, not my best work, but I wanted to get this done before I take off here for five weeks, Thanks for taking time to comment!

Thanks as well, Bob! Hmmm...you guys are still trying to get me ove there to do another plane, huh? Actually, I've got a big Stuka with an AM cockpit that I"ll do one of these days. I gotta "get back to my roots" first and knock out a Patton over in Armor before they forget who I am, ha ha. I have to admit, it's a bit of a milestone for me to be able to finally get a shiny finish--boy, have I learned a LOT about painting in the interim! I recommend the experience--frustrating as it sometimes was---to everyone!
