What Lousy Stuff Rant
Posted by hunter49 on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 1:29 PM

I don't know how you guy's feel about it, but. I have some older AMT kits, and among the things I've found to rant about are, the wheel and tire sets in the kit box. They simply do not go together, do they?. The wheel is either too small around, or, the tire is too big on the inside diameter. I am peeved about this!. Yeah I know big deal, right !.  I have some nice Satco tires but , they're out of business right. And those wheels just don't fit. I like the classic look and think the current crop of tires and wheels are hideous, and whats up with those thin sidewall rubber bands that pass as tires !. Can anyone help point me to tires and rims that fit each other ?.

Not as bad as those revell ones that are rubber and are split into two halves.

Found some good stuff over stradasports.com. but everywhere I linked to was sold out! Must be because of the Japanese disaster, production halted. Not sure unless these are really in high demand.

Well, having recently learned to do shiny finishes, I've diversified into doing some Auto modeling, and I can say that it's been a learning experience for sure--one of the things I've had to accept is that many of the older kits of cool cars are just from a different era, before this "golden age" of modeling. Many of the older kits are just hideously engineered, and have all kinds of necessary fixes and corrections to be made. The wheels are just one small part, You can use an exacto knife to open them up though, and I have to say that I really haven';t had a LOT of complaints about many wheels. What I HAVE had a problem with is wheels not fitting inside their wells--too far forward, too far back. Ugh. One out of every three older kits has a serious correction to be made.

I DO wholeheartedly agree with your disgust over the "Pegasus"-styled wheels with the minuscule tires and big rims, like in the "Donk's" kits. They look simply horrendous on everything but a very few modern cars, and I question the sanity of people who put these monstrosities on muscle cars. I'm honestly just completely horrified by them.

By the way, try both Detail Master and Tom's Model Car garage for tires and wheels--they have lots of nice stuff too if you browse their catalogs.
