I'm not exactly sure what they were called, but a record is way more convenient than the reel-to-reel sound systems.

I have to laugh when I see 8-tracks in these cars at car shows. Ugh, how I hated those things! You'd be jamming to a song and all of a sudden--silence for 20 seconds as the track flipped...man, who ever thought that was a good thing?!

Doog:

Think 8-Tracks were bad?

They were a major advance compared to the 45 RPM players in cars......

Nice build on the Mustang !

A very attractive color scheme.

I never knew the kit had an incorrect interior.

I referred back to a Mustang sales brochure but my brochure is for the 1972.

I especially like the neat painting of the seat trim,  and the same seat trim is shown in the '72 booklet.

As for your affinity towards adding rust to cars- well, rust on any Mustang of that era would conjure up more than a few memories in people and would not be out of place.

From what I recall, cars of that vintage rusted rapidly after a few years on the road.

Or at least  they did in Illinois due to winter road salt.

WOW-never would have imagined someone to be as much of a glutton for punishment as to put a record player in a car?! Man, I wonder what the technology was to stop it from skipping?!

Thanks for the kind comments about my model! I appreciate you taking the time! Big Smile

MOPAR, Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth products. Roadrunners, Cudas, Challengers, GTXs, you know, the real muscle cars. Boy that ought to stir the pot!

OOPS! Well, thanks for the clarification John! I might've known that at one time, but I probably just forgot about it?

Love those Road Runners and GTX's

PAWEL--thanks for coming over here to take a look!

ROGER--wow, that's some serious collection of machines!

My fiancee's borther builds/rebuilds cars, and he's got a 94 Camaro with some sick, bored engine in it that has mondo power. He can smoke the tires by blowing on the pedal. It's a pretty cool "sleeper"!

...wow. what I"d give today...!

You and me both! The first three cars I owned and sold before I was 20 years old are all collectables now. Who the heck knew "back in the day", right?

1) 1970 camaro Z28 360HP/350 w/4 speed, 3.73 posi, Orange w/Black interior.

2) The aforementioned Mustang Mach 1, 9" 3.90 posi, Blue/Silver w/ Black interior.

3) 1979 Trans Am, 400 w/4 speed, WS6, White w/Blue interior.

I didn't own an automatic transmission car until I was 37.

Now I watch these televised auctions (Barrett-Jackson, and Mecum) and look for my old rides and get a nostalgic smile for the times I had in those cars. Nothing can match the feeling of being a teenager at the controls of a powerhouse V-8 and manual transmission that you bought and built for yourself.

The funny thing is that my current car, a 2001 Camaro SS that I bought new and built into a true firebreather that can easily rip the guts out of the cars of my youth just doesn't have the same pull at my heart that those old rides did. Perhaps my memories give them a bit of "shine" that didn't really exist then but I would rather give up my current ride for one of my past rides than one of the current offerings, no matter how good they are off the showfloor.

That's some mighty fine looking work Karl! Tsk Tsk Tsk, I thought you was a MOPAR man.

Ha ha, John--thanks for the comment!

To be honest with ya, I just like muscle cars! Wait a minute--a Boss 351 ISN'T a "MOPAR?!

Honestly, I have no idea what one is then! I swear, I just build 'em, I don't know anything about 'em! Big Smile

That one takes me back to my senior year of high school when I was tooling around in my '73 Mach 1, 351 Cleveland with a 4 speed, playing ZZTop Deguello on the factory 8 track.

Hey thanks, all!

Marayan--thank, friend! Yeah, we're getting ready for the "big rain" but I don't think it's going to be anything but a weekend-ruiner!

HercMech--ha ha; I do love the rust, but sometimes I just need to see myself in the shine! lol! Thanks for the comment!

Thanks too, Ed and Bob! I got that battery in last night. Makes the engine bay look a little more complete for sure!

Jim--I hear ya there! I always loved Mustangs! Especially the Mach's--no matter what year.

Thanks to, Buckeye! I appreciate the comment!

Thanks again all, for taking the time to leave a comment! I do appreciate it, and look forward to posting something new soon! Big Smile

Great job Karl, as usual. There's a place a few miles from here that restores just Mustangs. Every time I go by there, the wife hands me a tissue and says "Here, stop drooling".Wink

Very nice work Karl...of course, we've come to expect such...Wink

And just tell people that the battery is in the truck for better weight distribution.

Nice work on this Karl. The colour scheme looks great and you have captured the look and stance of the real car. And that upholstery is pretty wild looking. What a nice way to break back into modelling after a major move. You had better batten down the hatches for the incoming hurricane! Hope you stay dry.

Heavy Metal Mach I Boss 351
Posted by the doog on Thursday, August 25, 2011 1:01 PM

Hi guys,

Remember me? Whistling...Big Smile Man, i"ve been so busy lately that my output has been WAAAY down! But I'm still plugging away, and can finally show the first model to come off the desk since moving to North Carolina--my "Heavy Metal Mach I", an old MPC Boss 302 kit that I modified quite a bit in front.

I've always liked this color scheme. It just looks mean!

The kit, unfortunately, has its problems and challenges. First thing was the front--it's just grossly oversized, and not really correctly-shaped. Thank god for Dremel tools is all I can say! The ol' Dremel really helped bring it into spec. That,s and a good amount of diligent sanding! I took a lot off the top and bottom, and also hollowed out the underside, adding support ribs and reflectors. I also used a contour gauge to fashion a front spoiler from styrene.

The interior is really rather incorrect for a '71--it's more akin to a '73--but I didn't feel like monkeying around trying to find a 71 pair of door interiors, so I just built it as was. I made the matts from 600 grade wet-sandpaper. The flocking is embossing powder, painted black.

I also added side windows by adding the post from styrene, and the window from clear plastic cut from a blueberries container. Wonderful thin, clear styrene plastic, great for windows in those containers!

Here's the finished pics! I used Tamiya paints for the finish, ALCLAD metallizer for the bumpers and rims--which are from an old 71 GTX kit--and a combination of Keith Marks and Kit decals. I made the rear-view mirror, fashioned a more correct rear fuel cover, hollowed out the hood openings, ,and a guitar string antenna completes the look.

The engine was nothing special; I did some plumbing, and painted it as a well-used Boss 351. Gotta drive it if you own such a looker! OOPS! I just realized that I forgot the battery! I'll have to correct that a little later!

I hope you enjoyed looking at mt :Heavy Metal Mach I"! If I had the funds, this is one of t he cars that I'd own. Ah, one can dream, eh?

Comments and critiques always welcomed! Big Smile
