Beer Wagon - Old Style
Posted by gregbale on Thursday, October 13, 2011 9:28 AM

Tom Daniel/Monogram's venerable "Beer Wagon," just for fun.

The original yellow scheme never appealed to me, so I decided to tag it with some good old Midwestern brand loyalty. (Decals home-made.)

Built straight out of the box except for a Detail Master gauge cluster to replace the black-line instrument decal.

Prosit!

Greg

Nice work!  I think I built that kit as a kid.  These days, I'd be tempted to 'update' it and add details, as I did with the Boot Hill Express I recently did.  Added wires, resin Hemi and torqueflite trans, gold leaf foil on the urns across the top.  I'd have to replace the chain and redo the headers on that kit, but it would be all for fun, like your version.

Very nice decal version on that kit !

I especially like the home made decals and beer keg painting details.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Ever consider sending photos to this guy?

Very nice and a well chosen draft. Growing up in Wisconsin, Old Style was the beer of choice in our neighborhood.

Great build and an excellent customizing job.  We owned a bar back in the '70s when Old Style was made in LaCrosse Wi. by G. Heileman and it was pretty good beer.  Later on, when G. Heileman sold out it's brewing interests, Old Style was produced by another brewery and the taste really suffered.  People started referring to it as "Mold Stale" and eventually we quit carrying it as you couldn't hardly give it away.

Again, great work and thanks for sharing.

Thanks, guys, for the input.

I grew up in Chicagoland, and in those days ('60s-'70s) Old Style was the beer in that market, sponsored all the sporting events, and advertised heavily on TV and radio, including the rock giants WLS and WCFL that we all listened to. Sixpacks and forest preserves were (and probably still are) a big chunk of the teen experience in that area, and Old Style was the favorite. When Heileman was sold to Pabst in the '90s, they dumped the (locally) famous krausening process and the "Mold Stale" gained wide use. They apparently went back to krausening in 2009 and the brand has begun winning awards again, but being way out-market, I haven't had a chance to sample the new/old brew.

OctaneOrange: It's box/stock except for the decals and gauges, and the "Authentically Kraeusened" sign on the front bumper. (The latter got in the way of the kit's starter hand-crank, which I haven't repositioned yet.) The kit does come with those beautifully molded barrels, complete with wood grain. I considered replacing the kit's one-piece engine with a blown Hemi, but I was looking for a quick, fun build. Maybe next time. Likewise the chains on the back stakes.

The epic fail was the photo-reduced headlight decals I made (just visible in the front-quarter shot above), rather than properly doing something with the oddly-molded solid slug headlights in the kit. They look good on funny cars, but didn't quite work here.

Sprue-ce Goose: Thanks for the link. I've been to Dave's Gallery a bunch of times, but I'd forgotten all about it. (Love your screen-name, by the way.)

Thanks to all for the comments!

Very nice, Greg, gotta love the old Monogram kits!

I have the Red Baron under construction now, and I'm with you--I wanted a fast, fun build (though I have succumbed to AMS and I stripped the chrome off the parts--I couldn't leave the scars from the sprue gates, or the seams on the fuel tank and the air intake).

I like your touch of localizing it, too, that's a good idea.

the Baron

(though I have succumbed to AMS and I stripped the chrome off the parts--I couldn't leave the scars from the sprue gates, or the seams on the fuel tank and the air intake).

I'm with you there, Herr Baron. The pony keg fuel tanks and the headers on this one had big, nasty seams running right down the middle that just had to go. I de-chromed everything except the rims.

Let us see the 'Red Baron' as you get on with it---that was the first showcar I ever did (when it was, gulp, new) and it's a favorite. I've got the long-awaited re-pop of 'Rommel's Rod' in the pile, but I'm not sure how soon I'll get to it, or how much/what kind of detail I'll throw on.

Cheers

Greg

I just noticed your two-tone finish matches the Old Style shield, that didn't register yesterday (Duh!, can't see my nose in front of my face), that's a nice touch, too.
