Would you buy a model car BOX?!
Posted by the doog on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 5:49 PM

Hey guys,

I was just looking through eBay, and I see these "box only" items, where a person is selling a model car box. Only.

And I'm sitting here thinking; with so many kits already in my stash, and running out of room to store them, why would I want just a "box"?

Does anyone here buy just boxes? Why? What do ya do with them?

Some people buy for the artwork.

It depends on the box. I've picked a couple of very early Airfix and Aurora kit boxes just for the nostalgia value and I have them on display in my model cabinet. It's not the sort of thing I'd go looking for, though.

I would not buy an empty box, but I'm not into the nostalgia thing.

If you had a complete vintage kit minus a box,I could see it.That's for collectors.

Not for me,but it's certainly not out of the question for a collector.People enjoy collecting many things.

Hi, Karl, I too have seen boxes and instructions been sold, I can fully understand the nostalgia involved but I have heard of a more dishonest side to things.

I have heard of the following.

  • Have original kit and need box to bump up value.
  • With star wars figures, have collection and re-card them to try sell as original mint, seen this happen in the UK, the persons involved were caught by trading standards officers.

The dirtiest of the lot would be to try and pass off a reissue kit as an original.

I suppose with collectors and speculators out there dishonest people will try cash in. I do understand people buying the boxes for a genuine nostalgic reason.

I hope my response has not darkened your thread.

Terry.

i might keep the box, but only after building the model.. the only box i keep with the model is the old aurora e-type jaguar. mostly i use them to store parts.

I collect old vintage toy ray guns, from the 30's, 40's, and 50's.  And I have purchased newly made replica boxes for some of these toy guns.  I have found a source who makes very accurate and well made boxes that look just like the originals!  They are costly, but for a serious collector like me, well, I'm happy to have them.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

Anyone got a box for the early Aurora Missouri kit I scored on E-Bay.
