Some of my Car kits right now.
Posted by MikeyBugs95 on Saturday, March 9, 2013 8:21 PM

Well... Even though I am new here I have made a lot of kits. I've made about 9 car kits with probably 3 currently in progress... I know that doesn't like much right now but since I've only been building models since I was about 7... and for about 10 years now. And considering most of the kits I've built are of aircraft, I have little time to do cars.

Well, I guess I might as well get on with the pictures.

First is my newest edition, a Revell 1/25 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A:

The Challenger didn't take me too long to build...  And actually I'm still on the final steps of completing it (decals and some painting touch ups). I can still smell the motor oil and gasoline though. Cool  (But I am having a problem with it. The back right corner of the hood isn't in line with the front of the hood. This causes the hood the tilt the back right corner up when the front is flush with the two side panels. But when the back is flush, the front left of the hood lifts. Any suggestions on how I could fix this would be greatly appreciated. I have tried shaving the back right corner down a little bit and it helped, a little bit. But currently, shaving it down hasn't done anything to alleviate the problem.)

Next is my [Insert company name here] [insert year here] VW Karmann Ghia. This one was probably one of my more confusing and more challenging builds in terms of the outside detail. Luckily there were a few metal "decals" like the VW emblem on the front of the car.

I will get more pictures of the Karmann. I only have 2 pictures right now because I took them in the wee hours of the A.M.

I will get the rest of the pictures of the rest of my builds and the builds that I'm still working on, later. For now, these two are what I have to show.

Uh... Any feedback? Suggestions? Questions?

At this time I'd like to bump this thread up. I would very much like some advice, tips, your opinions, etc. as well.

I apologize, I somehow missed seeing your post earlier. I was looking at your Challenger, and you might want to try "Bare Metal Foil" for your chrome trim on the windows. It's a thin foil with an adhesive on it that you can cut and trim on the window frames. I'd also paint the inside of the wheel wells black to simulate the undercoating.

The orange paint looks great on her, what did you use?

I also like your trim work on the grill area.

The problem with the hood may be that the hood is warped. Removing material won't help, but you might be able to bend it back to where it should be. I usually leave them be on my builds.

Another neat trick you can do is take a photo of your license plate on your 1:1 vehicle and reduce it to fit the plate holder on the rear bumper. It takes a little bit of practice to get it the right size, but the results are worth it.

Thanks for sharing your builds!

Yeah I've seen those ads for that Foil in another magazine I get and I've thought to myself "Now what would I use this for?" And now I know what I could use it for. And I think I did paint the inside of the wells black...

I just used some Testors orange something-or-another paints. I'll have to check it later. I like Testors paints... They work well for me... Except for their white and yellow. Those colors are way too thin to brush on.

And yeah I was figuring that it was warped too..

And I currently don't have a 1:1 vehicle.. I don't have a license yet. Lol.

Mikey,

That foil has a ton of uses; it's well worth the price.

On the white/yellow paint, spray paints or using an airbrush will get you where you want to go. As a matter of fact, I primarily use spray paint (Testors is also my favorite brand), like the flat black, grey, etc to speed up my builds. It's still a black art to me, but I spray the body colors, too. The trick is getting it on smooth with no runs or orange peel. Spraying also gives you the option of using the "candy" colors, which are translucent, and are sprayed over a silver, gold, or other color base to give you different effects.

Ok, cool. Thanks.

Now, I have a question. I have a Revell truck kit thats a few years old... Possibly early 2000's or 1990's... and it has no cab. I'm just wondering whether or not I'd be able to find any parts for it still. I'll check the name soon. But in the meantime, am I still able to get parts from Revell for kits that are a few years to over a decade old? The kit came in a package purchase I bought off Craigslist for $100. It had 2 Phantoms, a Panzer, a fire truck, this truck, a trailer, and some other kits as well. Including a 1:12 Lamborghini Countach..

Wow, cool score! You'd probably have to ask Revell directly, you can Google "Revell" for their website. They're pretty good at replacing missing parts, I don't know if they'll want to charge for them due to the circumstances. If not, there's probably a good chance that you can find a deal on ebay.

I have ordered parts from them before...speaking of that I have to order a canopy lifting part thing for my F-14B... but I just didn't know whether they'd still carry parts for a much older kit...

Oh. I also glued the rear taillights/backup lights panel to the Challenger. Right in the little chrome space where the lights should be. But I forgot to paint some inserts within the panel itself before gluing it on..

I restarted starting working on my '53 Hudson Hornet. I also started working on a LaFrance Firetruck by AMT Ertl for my dad.

I just got a new hood for my Challenger. All I have to do now is paint it, reattach the hood scoop, and put it back on the car and then it's finished.

Mikey: That Challenger looks pretty good. I have that same kit. I built it when I was about 14 and still have it. I'm 44 now. I gave it to my brother about 6 years ago as  a Christmas present (I built it for him when I was 14 and restored it to a presentable condition). He had it for around 3 years and his boy accidentally scooted it over in the closet. It fell 5 feet to a disaster. i put it mostly back together and have since bought the same kit to replace the damaged parts. I currently have it on display in the original case I put it in 30 years ago. Gotta paint a hood scoop and spoiler for it and it'll be A-OK.

I am having a problem with it. The back right corner of the hood isn't in line with the front of the hood. This causes the hood the tilt the back right corner up when the front is flush with the two side panels. But when the back is flush, the front left of the hood lifts. Any suggestions on how I could fix this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start by putting it in hot water to make it a bit softer so you can bend it back into shape. tape it in place while it cools and it should retain the shape.

I've done so many in my younger days - and if I were to do one now, I can do it without referring to the  instructions. I still have them all though except the ones that were pretty much a lost cause and beyond repair. LOL! I gotta dig them out and post some pics.
